Krav Maga Foundation Street Fighting Self Defense Class

  • May 19, 2013 · 5:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

If there are any changes to the event, such as a rescheduling due to inclement weather, all attendees will be notified by email on Sunday morning either by Jonathan or by myself.

This will be the same instruction given to the Israeli defense Forces as well as to the NYPD and other key elements of our military and law enforcement units.

We will have a two-hour introductory class in street fighting techniques.  Please be advised that this is not judo to build your self-esteem or anything in that sphere, but rather a seminar to show how a smaller unarmed person can face an armed opponent with the objective of eliminating the threat and disabling the attacker.

Please remember that this is solely an introductory session, hence the nomenclature of "foundation" class, so, if members like what they see and so desire, they can continue with the regular classes or the more advanced seminars that are scheduled for the rest of the spring and summer.  This is, if you will, a class to give us a taste of the buffet, and, if we want more, we are most welcome to join the line to the main table.

This class is geared for smaller individuals, and it is excellent for women.  Guests are okay, but only adults are allowed.

Specifically, this will be a two-hour, hands-on seminar on krav maga, the effective self-defense system from the Israeli Defense Forces.  Topics will include defenses against common attacks (punches and kicks), grab, chokes, strangles, and even threats with weapons (e.g., knives, guns).

When:  Sunday, May 19, 5:00 - 7:00 pm
Where:  The Field across from the parking lot of Ohr Kodesh Congregation at 8300 Meadowbrook Lane, Chevy Chase, Maryland
Cost:  Tuition if you sign up before May 10th is only $20 (use the link below). Tuition if you sign up after May 10th but before May 18th is $25.  "At the door" registration is possible, but tuition is then $30 (cash only).

This class is a good value, as it usually costs $60 per person.  We are getting a group rate and introductory pricing.

To register and reserve your spot, go here:

http://clients.mindbodyonline.com/ws.asp?studioid=12637&stype=-8&sView=day&sDate=5/19/2013

To sign up, click on the "Sign up Now!" button.

The Payment options include American Express, Visa, MasterCard, or Discover.

Wear sneakers with loose athletic clothing.  Bring a water bottle.

Your final payment constitutes your actual RSVP.

Our class will be conducted by Jonathan Levy, Instructor, The Krav Maga Edge and First Defense MAC and Cassie Clifford, Assistant Instructor, First Defense MAC.

The photos provided herein are from prior Krav Maga classes.

If a criminal attacked you with a weapon, and the intent was to harm you, would you know the best way to respond?

The best defense is a good offense.

You can use the attacker's weapon against the same attacker if you know how.

The best time to learn how to deal with deadly aggressive force is before that time.

Here is the web site of the First Defense facility:

Okay, you may say, but I never heard of this type of street fighting technique.  Where did it come from?  Good question.  And for every good question, there is a good answer.

Imrich (Imi) Lichtenfeld, the founder of Krav Maga, was born in Hungary in 1910 and grew up in Slovakia.  As a child, he worked in a traveling circus, and the circus was the only "school" that Imi ever knew.  He learned much there, particularly wrestling, boxing, and swimming.  And surviving.  In time, he used his unique skills to protect unarmed people in Jewish neighborhoods from the growing number of Fascist and Nazi thugs that existed in years preceding WWII who preyed on the weak and helpless.

After the war, he became an instructor in the Hagana, and later in the Defense Forces of the early Jewish state.

Imi died at age 87.  He never had a formal education.  In his demeanor and modesty, merged with a biting sense of humor, he was the perfect central European gentleman.  He would give constructive criticism to the youth who flocked to him for advice, and he had a perennial concern for the underdog and whoever was bullied; yet he was the antithesis of the muscleman image.

Although the many students who were alive because of his skills wanted Imi to be recognized and honored, he never wanted to gain from that knowledge.  He did not want to be in the spotlight.  In all his life, his only wish was to never be given any awards or accolades, albeit he had tens of thousands of adherents and pupils who attained high positions through the skills that he thought them.  He was soft-spoken and modest, yet if anyone tried to take advantage of him or of a seemingly defenseless person who may have been a student, the results were always the same, and they would not be repeated by the offender.

Imi in his advanced age.

Polite mugger, indeed! Hey, that was not a plastic knife we had - it was a regular steel blade knife with a rounded point on it......

For an introductory session on street survival and unarmed self defense, this was a fantastic class. We covered escapes from: front chokes, front hair grabs, front bear hugs, knife threats to arteries, and knife attacks to neck. We also learned how to use knee to groin strikes, hammer fist to face, and punches to throat. What I found very revealing was the part when the instructor asked the students to go and grab a knife, and every woman in the class ran over to the weapons pile and grabbed a knife - not one guy was able to get a knife! And it was a fine, sunny day to be outside as well.

This was alot of fun. The instructor broke it down so that the moves were easy to learn. I would do it again.
    Thanks, Bob. Another winner!

This will be on a Sunday night, and I realize folks may want to get home at an early hour since the next day is a weekday. However, if anyone is interested after the class, there are many restaurants in the area for a bite to eat and a cup of coffee. We can decide at the field.

When you say loose athletic clothing, do you mean long pants or are shorts ok?

Long pants or shorts are fine, and a tee shirt or sweater with sneakers will work. As of his writing, the predicted temperature should be in the mid to high sixties and clear. The important aspect is to be comfortable.

Linda, Vicki, and others who cannot attend this class on this date, please take a look at the signup link in the narrative above. Look at classes as well as events. For example, the Home Invasion Workshop is available on a later date. The seminars are primarily conducted in Chevy Chase, Fairfax, or Herndon.

The problem is that we have the Meetup RSVPs that you see here and then we have the online RSVPs who paid $20 with their credit cards. Obviously, the latter is the final list for the class. I will ascertain if the maximum number have in fact been met and if it is possible to add walk-ins.

I'm going to have to pay the $30 fee - I'm not sure if my daughter is going to attend with me, or if I'll go by myself. Thanks for setting this up!

Folks - Please make sure you pay the $20 online by credit card for this class. This is the only way that the head instructor can see the actual number of attendees so that he can have the right number of instructors be there. Just listing your name on the RSVP list but not paying does not indicate your attendance. Thank you.

I spoke with the instructor, and we will extend the discount to all who sign up online before May 10th rather than just to the first 10 persons who sign up, so it will be $20 for all. After May 10th, the online cost goes up to $25. It is still better than the regular $60 fee. Remember that the credit card payment is the online RSVP, unless you plan to be a walk-in and pay $30 on the day of the event.

I would love to attend this, but can't come on May 19th. Hopefully you can do another one in the summer or fall. Thanks Bob - you have such great activities!

Ditto for me too! I will be in Costa Rica that day (last day of vacation) and I would be interested in a later session. Plus, if it weren't for you, I would never see the wonders of Maryland (since I live and play mostly in No. VA). You came to mind when I booked my Costa Rica trip as it is an adventurous one - rappelling down waterfalls, canyoneering/hiking, zip line canopy tour, horseback riding.....all packed into 5 days. Keep up the good work, Bob.
