Deep Creek Lake Labor Day Weekend Getaway at a Luxurious Chalet

August 31, 2012 - September 3, 2012

Folks who are attending - Please read this document:

Adventure Bound Reservation

Don't worry about the difference in the names in the document from the actual attendee list, as this was done at the time of rental one year ago and the list has changed since then.

Here is a general description of the rental:

What to Expect at Adventure Bound

The chalet is an upscale one, so there is no smoking and no pets allowed in it.  Plus, we cannot arrive before 4 PM or else there will be a $50 fee per person.

Here is a view of our chalet, from the rear, facing the lake:

Adventure Bound is a luxurious villa in an area that already boasts world-class resorts.   It is very well-furnished, with first-rate amenities.  Here you can take a virtual tour of our beautiful residence:

http://rentals.deepcreek.com/rental/adventure-bound?view=tour&w=new

The picture below is another shot taken from our villa, looking out across the lake.  We will have our own private dock, where we will park our pontoon boat and our kayaks.  Here is our dock:

And it will be peaceful and secluded since the land behind the lakefront villa is ours, and we share it with no one else.  Here is the actual rear view from our residence, looking towards our private dock and the lake:

Deep Creek Lake is Maryland's largest lake, with 65 miles of shoreline, and McHenry is a resort area known everywhere for great dining, shopping, and outdoor activities.

Years past, I would drive by these high-end resorts, and wonder as to who could possibly afford staying at such beautiful lakeside luxury chalets.  What one cannot do, as a team we all can do.  We can all stay, during Labor Day Weekend no less, as a group in one of these top-of-the-line chalets.  And the best ones that get booked fastest are the ones on the water with the private docks.  Reservations for the choice vacation homes must be made one year ahead of time.  The price is high, but if we divide the total rental costs by 12, we can afford it.

Bring a good book to read.

We will be staying in the town of McHenry, a locale named after George Washington's surgeon, Dr. James McHenry, who once lived here.  In his words:

"I like this country, its salubrious air, its mild summers, its interesting views made up of hills, woods, glades, streams, and mountains; I should never move from the spot I am now on."

The Deep Creek Lake activity page, courtesy of our rental office:

http://www.deepcreek.com/

We would stay three nights and four days there.  Friday through Monday.

We could invite other boaters, as they pass by, to come over to our villa and to visit, or we can join them with our boat out on the lake.

But what happens if it rains?  We can go in our hot tub or sit by the fireplace inside the huge residence.  We can even go downstairs and shoot some pool at our very own billiards table.  Of course, the chalet is non-smoking.

Our game room

I realize that $270 is a high cost for a long weekend, but when you see this place, you will realize that it is worth every penny.  If we do it as a large group it becomes affordable.

We'll get a luxurious lakeside villa at a resort known globally for high-end living.  And we can accomplish this feat as a group.

Those going need to be able to work as a team, and I ask that solely positive individuals with a can-do attitude join us on this adventure.  We will have to share living quarters and chores, and, while the chalet is large the long weekend will stay pleasant if all are able to work and live with others.

Here is a photo of our Great Room, with the stone fireplace:

Here is our dining room:

And our kitchen:

This would be a fun and adventurous long weekend.  I am planning to rent us a boat, but not just any boat - I'm talking about the largest pontoon available on the lake, and we can use it on the lake as our floating platform.  We can get the 90HP pontoon, since we are reserving it so far in advance.  And we will use our own private dock at the villa!

Here is what we will have:  The largest pontoon on the lake that is 12 person capacity, and can go 20 MPH, and it is ours for the day for $500.00 which includes taxes and required fees.  Fuel is extra, so we will split that cost, for two tanks it comes to about $250.00.  Thus the full cost of the pontoon is $750.00 for the entire day.  Of course, the cost of the boat is included in the $270.00 payment.

Our 90 HP Triple-Pontoon, from the marina on the lake

Here is a detailed description of this specialized pontoon that can serve as our base camp on the lake and pull us in tubes or be the mother ship for kayakers:

  • These tripletoon boats are newer, go faster, tow better, and ride smoother than all of the competitors’ pontoon boats for rent on Deep Creek Lake.  They also don't look like a "rental boat."
  • On the 90HP the center pontoon allows for enhanced handling and performance. With an exclusive tripletoon technology, the larger center pontoon creates more lift out of the water. The third pontoon on the boat make these vessels four times more stable than standard pontoons.  If we have anyone that is timid about boating, this is how they should experience boating while on vacation.
  • At 23’ in length, the deck grants plenty of space and room for many people.
  • With maximum flexibility in mind, a rear entry gate with a fixed four-step ladder allows easy access for water sports.
  • Available with a table
  • The outfitter solely permits towing of tubes, skis, and wakeboards that are purchased or rented from Deep Creek Marina due to insurance stipulation.

Here is our pontoon reservation for all day on Sunday, September 2nd:

Pontoon Reservation

I have taken a specialized boating safety class with the MD DNR Police for this vessel on my own, to ensure our safety.  I completed it on 3-24-2012.  Below is the class certificate that expires when the Id card is issued, and I will have the permanent ID card with me:

Maryland DNR Police Boating Certificate

It is a place of solitude and adventure

One can choose a relaxing paddle

Or one can go for an adrenaline rush

Hiking opportunities in the area are fantastic.  We could go to Swallow Falls State Park, and take a hike there.  Georgette has just returned from there, and she took some beautiful pictures; they are located at:

http://www.meetup.com/Over-40-and-Kicking-It-Up-Adventure-and-Social-Club/photos/3544772/

For everyone's information, the web site for Swallow Falls State Park is at:  http://www.dnr.state.md.us/publiclands/western/swallowfalls.asp

Swallow Lake Falls State Park.

The eclectic shops and ice cream stores and eateries are all nearby our villa, and they are great for visiting or antiquing.  They have jewelry stores and vintage clothing stores, as well as fishing gear.  If you have a fishing license, the fishing here is great.  The entire Deep Creek Lake belongs to the state, so MD DNR Police rules apply therein.  Here is the general information on fishing if you have an interest in this activity:

http://www.dnr.state.md.us/fisheries/

There's also live music and entertainment on weekends at area night clubs, but folks are wholly on their own for those type of activities.

The villa has a computer with Internet access, but I don't recommend surfing virtual reality over the weekend when there is real aquatic surfing that can be done instead.

It is beautiful in the day

And it is also beautiful in the night

At Deep Creek Lake, there is absolutely no alcohol allowed on the lake, whether one is swimming, in a kayak, an inner tube, a set of skis, a motor boat, a pontoon, a submarine, a log, or anything else.  However, on the land property, such as at our villa (both the building and our lawn overlooking the lake) alcohol is allowed.  DNR Police strictly enforces this law, and it is a common sense rule, given the high volume of boating and aquatic activities taking place therein.  There is even scuba diving there, by the way.

Deep Creek Lake is huge, and its beauty is unmatched.

The meals are all on our own, and all should bring their own food and drink.  While sharing food sounds good, given the dietary needs and desires of 12 different people, it is too difficult to accomplish the logistics for 108 separate meals.  There are grocery stores nearby:

Walmart Supercenter  13164 Garrett Highway  Oakland, Maryland 21550

Shop 'n Save Grocery 24586 Garrett Highway McHenry, Maryland 21541 Mon-Sun 7:30 AM – 9:00 PM

And if the nights get chilly, we will light up the cozy fireplace.  Or build a big fire in our private outdoor fire pit behind our villa.  Bring board games if you will.  The temperature up here tends to be 10 degrees colder than down the road, so keep that in mind.

We'll team folks up in same-sex bedrooms.  Since you would be sharing a large bed in one bedroom, in case you want your own sleeping arrangements, please bring a sleeping bag to place in that bedroom.  We've done that in the past and it worked well.

I volunteer to park my vehicle as well as my kayak trailer at the realty office to conserve parking spaces for others at the villa.  Of course, carpooling is greatly encouraged, and, as the activity date gets closer, we can work on the carpooling aspect of the event.  Tom has a Suburban that can accommodate several individuals, and he volunteered to use it.  Since grocery stores are located right there, and the house is fully furnished with so many modern amenities, the amount of items that we need to bring on the journey is not that much as compared to a rugged camping trip or t a mountain cabin, for example.

I am bringing my mountain bike but not my kayak.  The bike I will leave at the villa, and there are kayak rentals there in case I desire one.

As noted, we bring all our own food and beverages, as well as paper products such as paper towels and toilet paper along with trash bags.

There is a multi-cinema nearby with the latest releases, and there are all kinds of activities nearby our resort.  There is disc golf, batting cages, geocaching, go karts, golfing, boat tours, rock climbing, laser tag, paintball, skate park, scenic chairlifts, segway tours, whitewater rafting, canoeing, mountain hiking, and on and on.  The only negative part is that we are not staying here for an entire year, as there is so much to do.

Parking will be limited, for solely 5 vehicles, so we can park extra cars at the real estate office 2 miles away from the villa. If we carpool, of course, that will be a good idea.  Since we are renting this chalet, they are letting us use the realty office area for overflow parking for free.  I am leaving my vehicle there.  But as this Labor Day Weekend gets closer, I am confident that we can get the carpooling arrangements worked out.

Here is the link to the map between the cabin and the realty office, a 2-mile one-way trip:

Bring a bike, a kayak, and hiking gear, as well as a swimming outfit and a beach towel.  Yes, there are several kayak rental outfitters right there as well, as well as bike rental shops.  And there is a sandy beach along the shore that we can enjoy as well.  Because Deep Creek Lake is naturally spring fed, it has some of the best water clarity in the eastern United States.  A true treasure.

The beach at Deep Creek Lake with several kayaks visible.

Another shot of the beach.

Again, the dates will be August 31 - September 3, 2012, for the 12 vacationers.  The total will be used for the villa and for the pontoon boat.

Our residence is close  to the dining areas, restaurants, ice cream shops, and other stores.

Payments:  Some of us who used online payment systems have been scammed.  So, to avoid processing fees and scamming issues with third-party entities, please send $270 to me made out to me at the below address now.  The first 12 people who pay are in.  It only takes one day for first class mail to reach me from the Washington, D.C. metro area.  Time is of the essence so that we can get this fantastic villa.

All receipts and information will be made available to all so all can see how the expenditures have been made.  Any extra funds will be equally distributed to the members.  If you cannot make it after having paid, get someone to take your place.

The bedding assignments will be made by order of payment received.  It is first-come, first served, but I am claiming the upper level master suite with king bed, and I will have a safe up there for us that will be removed once we are all there for any objects to keep secure.  And there is a computer with Internet in our chalet, so you don't need to bring your system, albeit I do not recommend staying on the computer all weekend with what this place has to offer.

Here is the web site of our villa:

http://rentals.deepcreek.com/rental/adventure-bound

Sheets and towels are provided for the maximum capacity of the home.  Beds will be made up with linens, pillows, a blanket and bedspread, and towels (1 bath towel and 1 washcloth per person) will be hanging ready for you to kick your shoes off and relax.  Beach towels are not provided; so please do not remove towels from the house, and be sure all linens stay when we leave.

The villa features standard items, which include the following:

  • Drip coffee maker
  • Toaster or Toaster Oven
  • Pots and pans
  • Dishes, utensils, and glassware.

It will be nice to have our private water front location on the lake

The realty office told me to move on this reservation, as such places on the water are guaranteed to be rented to someone.  It has never been left vacant in the past.  Please be advised that the actual and final RSVP is my receipt of payment for the activity.

So, please send a check for $270 to:

Bob Cianflone

821 Brunswick Street

Brunswick, Maryland 21716

Once I receive your check, you are either in on the reservation, or the money gets returned to you if the reservation falls through or if you are above the first 12 responders.

A sunset at Deep Creek Lake.

The chalet is ours for the Labor Day Long Weekend!  It is now booked.  Please refer to Reservation Confirmation #[masked] and please ignore references on the web site stating that this chalet must be rented for a minimum of seven days during peak season as it does not apply during this holiday weekend:

My Schedule:

Folks – We have had several changes to the final list of attendees.  Accordingly, for those who are coming, please read the entire activity narrative as well as the information contained in the links.  Some of us want to do group outdoor events, and others want to do solo events; both are fine.  There is no pressure to do anything.  One can sit along the lake, take in the scenery, or read a book.  Here is what I will be doing, and anyone is most welcome to join me:
Friday: Arrive at the villa after 4 PM.  After a run to Walmart, I plan to just hang out at our property and relax.  We have our own private dock, our own private lakeside area, and there will be a full moon.  Inside, we have a pool table.  Outdoors, there is a fire pit and a hot tub.  I will bring wood for a bonfire.
Saturday: When I wake up, I will do a moderate hike at Swallow Falls State Park.  Later in the day, I will ride my bike and go to the beach.  Later, I will do another Walmart run, to have whatever I wish to take with me in my cooler for the pontoon ride the next day.  And in the evening I plan to go to a nearby Italian restaurant.
Sunday: We have our long-awaited all-day pontoon adventure and we can go anywhere we want that is accessible to us on the entire lake.  Naturally, we will make break stops back at our dock as needed.  In the evening, I would like to explore the area.  At night, I plan to repeat my Friday night relaxing at the villa.
Monday: After making sure all is well at the villa, checkout by 12 Noon.  I then plan to explore the area once more.

Here is the link to the area weather forecast that is usually accurate except when it is not:

It took me two months to set it up...... We will do a weekend at Crabtree Falls instead, because the logistics are less involved. However, you are welcome to host this event, and, if you want, I can send you all the background details for it.

Fun place and fun people. Nice, cordial cookout Friday night to meet and greet everyone. Thanks Sara-Beth! Wisp resort is a fun place; Mountain coaster ride is a blast, Segway tour is great too, and I really enjoyed the golf at Thousand Acres and Wisp, and kayaking under full blue moon. Too bad it rained a lot, but I got in plenty of activities anyway. Sorry I missed the hike at Swallow falls with everyone, but I did it on my own after the Hurricane hit and it was nice and relaxing in the light rain.

This was a truly relaxing weekend for me, and it was nice to hang out at the villa. The setting was beautiful, and we got to experience all four seasons from both hemispheres while there. On the first night, we saw the Full Blue Moon, and Tom had his telescope set up on our private dock so that we could see it up close. Then there was a summer hike at Sallow Falls. We were then visited by a typhoon. Then we had our Pontoon ride in what felt like a winter month. I thought it was going to snow it got so cold out there! Several folks explored the area, and visited the resort community's establishments. The most energetic ones went golfing, kayaking, segway riding, played tennis, and even rode a chairlift up the mountain. At night, our backyard that opened up the lake was taken over by a herd of deer. We also had two bonfires. It was all worth it. And a thank you goes to Sarabeth for getting (as well as grilling) hamburgers for us on Friday night.

Thank you, Bob. This was an outstanding trip with a great group of people. We had a little bit of everything. From a campfire, pontoon boat and hike at Swallow Falls by Bob and Rocky ....marshmallows under a birthday candle light by Rhonda to entertainment by Jody and her guitar, along with Tom's board games, chocolate clusters, breads and mallasses cookies. Dianne couldn't get enough with all of Deep Creek activites because we never saw her. There was something for everyone!

As we have the boat all day I'm for sticking with Sunday. Currently only 30% chance of rain. Have all day to fit in some boating...even if between some storms. Forecasts do change & sat could b worse. @bob. Maybe do an update friday afternoon.

Rocky is leading the hike on Saturday, as she is familiar with Swallow Falls and hiked there before. So, we have a hike on Saturday and a pontoon boat excursion on Sunday. More information will be forthcoming; stay tuned! I really want to go to the beach, as well.

We do have a firepit, so that would be a wonderful time for a bonfire. On Saturday, we will wait for Steve and any others to show up who are traveling Saturday morning, and then Rocky will lead a hike at Swallow Falls State Park (take a look at the great pictures she posted on the ab ove link). The biking road path listed below also goes by the beach at Deep Creek Lake State Park and one can drive towards that location rather than circumnavigate the entire lake. One trip can be from the villa and over the top of the lake hugging the lake. And a separate trip would entail driving farther out and riding on the road by the lake that touches the beach area.

While this entire paved bike path is 44 miles, one can do just a part of it. And it goes on Marsh Hill Road where our Villa is located:

Dianne - Take a look at the amenities above and it lists the grill. The meals are thus far on our own; as of this writing, I plan to be outdoors and not planning on doing a shared meal. Saturday night I was planning to go to an Italian restaurant that Rocky mentioned. Saturday it is Swallow Falls and Sunday it is Pontoon Boat.

I am not sure on timing. Late friday or very early Saturday arrival. Depends on work schedule Friday...

I will be riding with Sarabeth, going West from Brunswick, and getting there at 4 PM - remember that we can't go in the lodge (even to put anything in the refrigerator) before that time.

Hello All! Just bought Kelly's spot and am looking forward to fun times with you! I live in McLean, VA and am happy to offer a carpool spot in my car, and have room for another bike on my bike rack.

Dianne - Who did you speak with at Adventureland to get the parking there?

You can park at the realty office after 5 cars are in there. If you get permission from Adventureland or anywhere else, you can do that. I am parking at the Realty Office. Like I said, I encourage carpooling.

Kelly is not coming. That leaves 11 people coming unless Kelly is able to sell her slot. I am carpooling with Sarabeth. If you folks figure out who is carpooling with who else then I can tell you if we can get 5 vehicles there.

Jim - Meetup made a global change to its conversation postings so that they are in order with the most recent comments appearing first. Take a look at the activity narrrative and the links therein on the chalet amenities and its location.

In addition to what is in the activity write-up, here are some items to note for our weekend:
Adventure Bound is in a wooded area with no AC
Bring your own wood for the fire pit
Only 5 cars are allowed at Adventure Bound
The check in time is at 4 PM ($50 fee if earlier)
We can take the pontoon boat to a restaurant or ice cream shop
Look at the links in the narrative for activities and restaurants
    More information will be forthcoming

As you all know, I refrain from alcohol and drugs except on rare occasions because I am always on call plus I go out boating at all hours. The outdoor events, as always, will be governed by the weather. I did a weather analysis of the past 3 years for the Labor Day Weekend, and there was a 25% chance of rain on these dates. I took (and passed) the required DNR Police course for the pontoon that the outfitter required, but good assistance will be needed with this large pontoon boat.

Diane, there are several grocery stores very nearby and easy to get to. Lots of restaurants, but many not very good. Water and soft drinks are inexpensive and since many folks cannot/do not cook, it is not a big deal for them to bring these sort of items. This is a group outing and everyone should bring something to share with all. I owned a lake front home at DCL for twenty years and know the area well. I look forward to meeting you.

I would suggest that a few people bring cases of water and soft drinks, including their preferred beverages. Thank you Bob for all of the hours of work I know you spent putting this weekend together.

Bob - I noticed that your list of foods for members joining us on this fun weekend are all breakfast foods, so I removed my comment concerning what I will bring because I feel bagels, cream cheese, etc. should be taken up by the folks who would rather not cook. I'll bring a lunch that we can all enjoy on our deck area on Sat or Sun, plus some other goodies. All while trying not to step on Tom's toes!

I think I better get an extra fuel container for our pontoon boat!

Yes, Jim, charts are available. But for this particular weekend boat reservations are getting all booked up, so you may want to move on that. Unless you put a jet engine on your canoe, that is......

We are set for the villa. For the pontoon (and fuel) we have $886 for a one day rental. I was thinking of either Saturday September 1st or Sunday September 2nd for our boat outing.

The final cost of the villa, with county and state taxes, insurance, admin fee, realty fee, peace of mind fee (don't ask), resort fee, came to $2,353.26 so the original estimate of $2,490.00 was a good one. The rest of our funds ($886.74) will then go to the pontoon cost and fuel charges. I had originally estimated $750.00 for the pontoon and fuel, thus the extra $136.74 can be applied towards the fuel cost since that is always an unknown factor especially if we have it for the entire day.

I finally figured out what Tom said, using a dictionary and a thesaurus...... If the man can cook like he can write, we're in business!
