Announcing a new Meetup for Over 40 and Kicking It Up Adventure and Social Club!
What: Mason Neck Bike Ride and Picnic at Great Marsh Birding Area...
When: Sunday, July 31, 2011 10:30 AM
Where: Mason Neck National Wildlife Refuge
Lorton, VA 22079
Let's go for a nice social bike ride! Mason Neck peninsula near Occoquan is the perfect place for scenic recreational cycling, and summer is a great time for enjoying its beautiful green canopy of shaded roads and trails just a few miles off I-95 at the Lorton exit.
The riding at Mason Neck is on flat local roads and paved park trails suitable for all types of bikes, with little traffic and lots of pretty scenery and forested woodlands along the way. The route we will take goes through Mason Neck State Park, a National Wildlife Refuge, Gunston Hall plantation (home of George Mason), and several nice neighborhoods with lovely homes facing the Potomac River. There is even a covered bridge along the way, as well as good restrooms.
The total ride will be 16 miles, with an option for 6 additional miles. We will ride together as a group at a relaxed average pace of 11 mph, which is about normal for most people. This is a pleasant easy ride. However you must be able to pedal your bike for two hours with occasional rest stops, so be prepared to go the whole distance. Nobody will be left stranded, but there is no guarantee other riders will be there the whole time if you can't keep up during the ride.
Riders are responsible for their own safety. Helmets are required for everyone. No helmet, no ride...
After the bike ride, we will stroll a half mile from the parking area down a cool paved path through the woods for a group picnic on the bird watching platform at Great Marsh (pictured here). The platform is a nice wooden deck area on Great Marsh that is ideal to observe nature and socialize. As always, bring something fun to eat and drink with your Over 40 compatriots.
Since this is an outdoor event that depends upon good weather, please check back here on the morning of the ride. I will post a notice by 8:00 am if the ride needs to be cancelled due to weather. If you have any questions or get lost on the ride date, call Jake at 703-798-8435.
Take I-95 South to Lorton (Exit 163). Then go left on Lorton Rd. to Route 1 and turn right heading south toward Woodbridge. Turn left from Route 1 onto Gunston Rd. and drive straight for approximately 7 miles until you see the Great Marsh Trail parking lot on the right just before the Y-intersection at Hallowing Point. DO NOT ENTER MASON NECK PARK. The ride starts at the Great Marsh Trail parking lot which is 1.5 miles past the park entrance on Gunston Rd.
Hope to see you there...
Check it out!
