ABOUT THIS GROUP:
Hi, I am Carolyn and I recently took over from Ginger as the main organizer of this group. Her vision for this group is in the first paragraph below. The rest of the comments are my ideas about what this group is all about. Welcome! We are accepting new members and hope that you will actively participate in planning and attending the activities.
Ginger founded this group because Meetup is a GREAT idea, but she noticed that not many people actually attended the Meetups, even though there were plenty of members. So she thought, maybe the problem is that most groups are based too loosely on common interests, and not enough on shared values. "Wanting to make new friends wasn't enough to get me out of the house if it meant spending time with people who have little in common. It's hard to scratch up a friendship if you don't agree on things, right? I wanted to be with people who were "like me". So, I decided to start a group with a narrower focus, in hopes of finding people who are like me."
First, this group is for people who are older than 50 and "lefties" in the sense of political values. While some are left-handed, this is not a group specifically for that kind of leftie! Many of the people in this group are either retired or nearing retirement, so many of the activities involve little or no money to get involved. Dues are set at $5 per year, which mostly pays the group Meetup fee. But this is open for review,as other groups do not have a set fee and depend on members to put "money in the pot" when they attend events. However, doing that would probably cost more, if you attend more than 3 events per year!
Secondly, while members of the group lean left politically, many of the events are not about politics. It is simply a place where people can express their values without risk of being attacked or lectured.
Third, we are interested in forming new activities and groups in all areas of town, so people do not have to travel too far (unless they want to). Our current activities have centered around the SE and central (downtown) Denver area. We have members who live way north and west, as well as those who live way south and east, and other places as well. It will take some people "stepping up to the plate" to help organize some activities. I am still working and only one person, so I cannot do it all. If you have an idea and willingness to be an event organizer, please let me know!
Lastly, pay attention to our discussion board, as that is where the planning will happen. And let me know if I can help. I will certainly try! Carolyn
