The Destination
Back in the Wyatt Earp era, Bisbee was a bustling mining town that attracted both petticoat-clad elites in their Victorian mansions and original heavy metal hell-raisers in crowded frontier saloons. These days, the Arizona town is a popular artist community built on even more prized natural resources: a near-perfect year-round climate, uniquely preserved Wild West ambiance, modern-day creative energy, and a timeless romantic setting. Once you've surveyed this rich cultural landscape, you'll understand why John Wayne, Hollywood's most iconic cowboy, liked to hang his hat here.

The Digs
A historic bed and breakfast in a former red-brick elementary school built in 1918, School House Inn Bed & Breakfast provides a much-needed primer in turn-of-the-century Southwest charm. Owners Paula and John carefully maintain the antique décor, unique classroom embellishments, and Old World service that's earned the eclectic lodging a Fodor's Choice designation every year since 2008. Discover spectacular views of the deep-green Mule Mountains and the town's brightly colored homes from the balcony. Or, curl up with one of many library books in a sun-dappled chair in your very own sitting area.

We really want you to enjoy yourself at the School House Inn. When you're not out exploring our fascinating town of Old Bisbee, or participating in one of our local events like bird watching or stair climbing, you are cordially invited to enjoy the following:   We also offer bottled water, canned soda, Gatorade for a very low price.   We offer special packages for Weddings, Family Reunions and Corporate/Small Business seminars and retreats.   Wireless broadband access   Childhood antiques on display   Hundreds of great reading books   Complimentary home-cooked breakfast   Lounge with TV, VCR, DVD   Complimentary tea, coffee, cocoa, popcorn available all day!   Patio that even the serious bird watcher will enjoy   All rooms are non-smoking.   Balcony offering a spectacular view of the rich, green Mule Mountains and
brightly painted homes.

Really good time. Love that town. Got to go back. B&B hosts, John and Paula were so nice. If I were running that place, I'd forget a few things too. Thank you Midge for arranging this for the Meetup group.

I couldn't run that place! Too much like work.

Thanks again, Midge - It was soo much fun and the city always seems to offer up some real character each time I've gone. Even the "locals" couldn't answer our questions about why those people were jogging downtown in some kind of robes or whatever they were - from young guys to a bearded "older" man - they would just tell me, "No I have no idea what that was - Bisbee's just got weird people and things going on". Hilarious and fun - and of course the great service we received at the "just starting up" SSS Restaurant - we were really catered to. Food was great there and also at Rosa's. The people in our group were so much fun to be with! Well worth the drive!

My thoughts exactly - for a "cool" getaway this summer!

That was so funny! John tried 'forget' we got WINE with those cookies. Because we got the 'good guy' price. In a way, I really am lost in the 60's and 70's myself. I can relate.

Very relaxing trip. Bisbee is full of characters, many of whom look like they are lost in the 60's/70's. Schoolhouse Inn B&B very interesting place with lots of neat antiques and good breakfasts.

I found out from car rental compsny that it will probably take some time to get my rental this morning becasuse they will be super busy and I don't want to hold anyone up, so I won't meet at Costco after all - at least when they called confirming my reservation they gave me the heads up and I will be there early but I'm "playing it by ear" at this time and if close in time I may call Midge to see if you're at the El Charro when I get near Tucson.
    See everyone in Bisbee!

    March 15, 2013

  • Midge B.

I don't know about everyone else, but I plan to be at Costco at 9 am Friday morning. I have a gray KIA Soul and will park near the fuel pumps. If you want to stop in Tucson for lunch, El Charro Cafe is just off I-10 and St Marys.

    Midge,
Vivi, Debbie and I are driving together. We may bring something to eat on the way down. We'll just meet you all in Bisbee a the appointed time 3PM?
We plan on doing the 10:30 mine tour on Sat.
    See you in Bisbee.

Ok, is anyone interested in Tombstone after the Mine Tour?

      1 · March 14, 2013

  • Linda D.

Has anyone decided to meet at the Costco Friday morning? And if so, at what time? Thanks!

    March 13, 2013

  • Linda D.

Just wondering what time to meet at Costco after I pick up my rental by around 8:30 over at Litchfield and I-10. It's the Costco at 99th Ave and W. McDowell at the transition of the fwys 101 & I-10.
I should be able to be there by 9:00 or at the latest 9:30 a.m. and that would make me feel better knowing and being able to get in touch w/others in the group on the road together - you just never know - and would be nice to meet for lunch! Again, my cell is: (480)[masked] if anyone needs a ride or needs to get ahold of me.

Does anyone have their carpool plans finalized? Let me know ASAP who rides with who, meet at Costco I-10 & 101, stop in Tucson for lunch?

    March 10, 2013

  • Midge B.

Ok, everyone, you see Linda's invitation. Let's get our "caravan" plans finalized. Last year we stopped in Tucson for lunch, so if we leave Phx around 9 or 9:30 we should be ready for a stop there. Checkin is 3 pm. and we can decide what to do Fri. night after we arrive. Then Sat. we can go to the Mine Tour or walk around Bisbee, maybe to Tombstone, or we can hit Tombstone or St. David on the way back on Sunday. my cellphone no. is[masked]

When some of used to travel for our group campouts, weekend trips around the state, in to Mexico, etc., some of us would meet up to "caravan" to our destination - in order to feel a little more secure in case of car problems, etc. Is anyone interested in meeting up in the morning and caravaning down - especially to exchange cell phone numbers, etc., just in case? We could plan to stop for lunch together if any of you would like to. My cell phone number is (480) 291-4457. We've gone thru Tombstone and stopped there on the way to or on the way back from Bisbee also. There's the monastery that I've never been to in St. David too. Again, if someone would like to ride with me, please give me a call - same if we want to meet up somewhere on the west side close to I-10? Should be so much fun down there!

Linda you ask good questions, as well as provide great extra info about Bisbee. I'm with Linda, need more info on what time are we planning to leave and meetup in Bisbee? Anyone??
    Just jump right in here!!??

Hello, I decided to rent a car because my truck is not good on gas. What times are people planning on leaving to head for Bisbee on that Friday? I'm over in the Avondale area and are picking my car up over on Litchfield Rd. south of I-10. I'm open to taking at least one rider with me and just sharing the gas cost. I don't think the car I'm getting is very big, well, that is compared to my crew cab truck, anyway. I believe check in starts around 3:00, right?

sorry but I wouldn't be able to make it. Have fun:-)

Etta would like to go on the Bisbee trip. Does anyone want a roommate?

    February 21, 2013

  • Midge B.

I don't really see an advantage to the van if it only holds 7 people
which means we couldn't all ride. Also, it would be $42 ea w/out extra insurance plus gas which would be approx. $20 each.

    February 20, 2013

  • Howie L.

I neglected to mention this an unlimited miles deal on the cars.

Enterprise Rental: SUV: 7 passenger $394.00 A 7 passenger Mini Van costs $322.00 The rental period is from Fri. 3/15/13 at 9:00 AM until Mon. 3/18/13 at 9:00 AM
Anyone planning to help drive would need to be present at the rental. The car could be picked up at 2929 N. 75th Ave. (75th AVE and Thomas) These prices DO NOT include optional insurance (recommended) that would cover anything that may happen to their car. The extra insurance costs about $20.00 to $25.00 per day. Most people who carry full coverage on their personal car, are also covered driving a rented car. If some else uses different company, you might compare prices. I almost always use Enterprise for price/service. I hope this is helpful.

I will find out and post the price to rent the maximum passenger
van available. I will find out on 2/19/13.
