Walk - Bix Bottom - Pishill - Stoner - 7 Miles

A walk in the Chiltern hills that takes in three miles of the Oxfordshire Way. There is a moderate climb at the beginning of the walk and a really challenging climb just south of Stonor. However, the ridge-top walk that follows makes the effort more than worthwhile.

The charming little church at Pishill has a bench if you want to stop and rest for a while (the name, incidentally, means 'a hill where peas grow').

The church ruin of St James' was originally a Norman church which served the local farming community until the late 19th Century.

Note: RSVP's don't open until 6pm on 3rd March.

Start Point

We meet near in the ruins of St James Church near Bix Bottom (not the one in Bix of the same name!) and will park on the wide verges nearby. There is limited parking so please park considerately and number of walk places will be limited to restrict the number of cars.

There is NOT an accurate Postcode so please check this map link and following directions.

Directions from Oxford:

Head on A4130 and turn left when you reach Bix soon after the road turns into a dual carriageway.

Follow road to the left of the Church in Bix heading towards Middle Assendon. You will so reach a right hand bend (White Lane) and follow this all the way to Middle Assendon.

At Middle Assendon, turn left onto B480 and then immediately take left hand road to pass by a large barn conversion on your left. There may be a signpost for Bix Bottom but it may not be obviously placed. Continue past the barn conversion.

Drive approx 1.25 miles to reach the church ruin. This is past Bix Bottom Farm on the left (turn right at the nearby junction) and is shortly after Valley Farm Workshop, also on your left.

We start the walk at 10AM sharp. (Please ensure you're at the start point at least 10 mins beforehand).

Walking grading: Moderate (Height gain 210m)

Dog friendliness: Unknown (open countyside)

Estimated walk end time: 1:30PM

Lunch

For lunch afterwards, we will be driving back to the Rainbow in Middle Assendon (tbc). As it's Mothering Sunday it's a fair chance all venues will be busy and we may have limited spaces or may have to take pot luck back at the Waterfront Cafe in Benson.

If you would like to go to lunch, please reply to the "Reply below using the Reply button if you would like a place for lunch --------v" Post below.

If I don't see a request I will assume "No" for lunch.

Lifts
We like to reduce the impact on the areas we visit and its sometimes difficult to find places with adequate parking, so we encourage lift shares with our regular drivers.

If you need a lift, please post below indicating that you'd like a lift and from which general part of Oxford and surrounding villages you would like to get picked up. There is sometimes a better chance of being picked up from one of the Park & Rides as people use the ring road enroute. There will be some guidence notes added to the messages boards soon.

Please ask for a lift ASAP even if your on the waiting list when you do so as the list is constantly changing.

Donations

We would welcome a donation of around £1 towards ongoing overhead costs associated with the Meetup service and ancillary costs.

For new members or walkers, please read the Walkers Guide thread in the forum.

That's right John a good few miles from Henley. Check out Thames Travel bus service too, there's a bus from Reading -Wallingford then a bus to Henley that stops at Bix or if there's a train to Henley you might be able to get the bus to Bix if you can't find a lift.

Excellent... Thanks Sandra... Just come from the railway station and there ain't no trains on Sundays! I seem to remember that they only run on 'Summer Sundays'. I'll have a look at the 'Thames Travel' website and see if i can get straight from Reading to Henley but i bet the walk fills up BEFORE i find out IF i can get to it or not! ;-)

There's an 'Arriva' bus service (on a Sunday) from Reading, arriving at 'Bell Street' (in Henley) at 09:38. IF anyone's good enough to pick us up from there, i can come along!!! (Currently TWO spots remaining). Much appreciated IF anyone can oblige...

Hi peeps, i'd love to come along IF i can get to the area for 10:00am. Thing is, map doesn't work. Off the top of my head, without going home and having a rummage through my road atlas, (yes, they DO still exist) the only 'Bix' i know of is near Henley, sort of Nettelbed neck of the woods? Am i barking up the right tree? If so i'll get to Henley (IF there's a train on a Sunday) and take it from there.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
