Walk - Bourton-on-the-Water - Lower Slaughter - 5.8 Miles

A walk crammed full of beauty and interest, beginning at Bourton-on-the-Water and visiting Lower Slaughter, both places drawing many visitors all through the year.

Bourton-on-the-Water has a number of speciality shops of quality, inviting cafes and restaurants and several visitor centres such as Birdland, the Motor Museum, a perfumery and a model village, but the main attraction is its character and beauty, with wonderful Cotswold buildings lining the streets and straddling the flowing
water running through its centre.

Lower Slaughter has an appeal all of its own, the same River Windrush flowing past lovely stone cottages and houses of exquisite charm and where the old mill in its picturesque setting now houses a museum. The superb St Mary's Church welcomes 10,000 visitors a year and the huge manor dovecote is one of the largest in England.

RSVP's open at 6PM on Sunday 9th June.

Start Point

We meet in the large car park on Station Road, situated behind the Texaco Garage. This is a Pay and Display so please bring plenty of change. Cotswold District council have not published charges for this location but their other car park in the same village is £3 for 3 hours and £3.90 for 5 hours. This car park may be more expensive.

We start the walk at 10AM sharp. (Please ensure you're at the start point at least 10 mins beforehand).

The area is shown better in the Map link

Walking grading: Moderate (Height gain 25m)

Dog friendliness: Mostly open countyside, some road walking

Estimated walk end time: 12:30PM

Lunch

For lunch afterwards, we will looking to visit one of the local pubs (tbc) but this is a popular place for tourists so places might be limited and prices higher than normal.

If you would like to go to lunch, please reply to the "Reply below using the Reply button if you would like a place for lunch --------v" Post below.

If I don't see a request I will assume "No" for lunch.

Car Share
We like to reduce the impact on the areas we visit and its sometimes difficult to find places with adequate parking, so we encourage lift shares with our regular drivers.

If you need a lift, please post below indicating that you'd like a lift and from which general part of Oxford and surrounding villages you would like to get picked up. There is sometimes a better chance of being picked up from one of the Park & Rides as people use the ring road en-route. There are some guidance notes on our message boards here.

Please ask for a lift ASAP even if your on the waiting list when you do so as the list is constantly changing.

Donations

We would welcome a donation of around £1 towards ongoing overhead costs associated with the Meetup service and ancillary costs.

We would be grateful if this was done before the start of the walk.

For new members or walkers, please read the Walkers Guide thread in the forum.

Lovely walk, and good to explore new bits around that area that I haven't walked before as well as the more familiar parts. Always good to have an ice-cream at the mill in Lower Slaughter.

The weather forecast has improved since earlier in the week. Suggest you still bring wet weather gear just in case.

In case you are not aware there is a motor cycle event on Sunday morning,
    http://www.britishlegion.org.uk/about-us/media-centre/calendar-of-events/fundraising/ride-of-respect-2013
10,000 bikes in batches of 500 controlled by the police and road closures in place between Abingdon and Brize Norton
This may affect travel to our start point

parking may 2012 osw was £3.70 for 3hrs and £5.50 for 5 hrs, private carpark not cotswold district council............

    June 10, 2013

    • Beth E.

Cleo, the car park charges were correct for 2012 and was/is for the car park on Station Road. Charges for the Council car park on Rissington Road is a flat fee on Sunday, which is higher than for Station Road. Last time there was parking on a field on Station Road which was far cheaper than either of the other two, but is only open certain times during spring and summer.
