Walk - Brightwell-cum-Sotwell - Little Wittenham - Dorchester - 8.1 miles

Starting in the picturesque village of Brightwell-cum-Sotwell, the walk heads north out of the village along an old Roman road before heading west through the Little Wittenham Nature Reserve. Upon exiting the wood, the walker is confronted by the River Thames to the right and Castle Hill to the left. The pleasing village of Little Wittenham follows, where you can sit in front of the church and enjoy the hills in front of you.

Moving on, the walker crosses the river for the first time and heads towards the historical Roman Dorchester-on-Thames and through the dyke presumably used for flood control. In Dorchester, the walker has the option of visiting the abbey and museum or just wandering about taking in the many pubs.

Heading out of Dorchester, the walk takes the rambler through the Hurst Water Meadow before entering pleasing Warborough with its river flowing down the centre of the village. Later the walker reaches the Thames and takes the Thames Path to arrive at Shillingford Bridge, with further views over the river.

There then follows a quick climb before returning to Brightwell.

Note that to meet pub serving times, we are are likely to have to keep the pace up and possibly remove some parts of the route to keep to schedule.

RSVP's open at 6PM on Sunday 16th June.

Start Point

We meet by the War Memorial in the centre of Brighwell-cum-Sotwell. There is limited spaces here so anyone who is staying for lunch may want to park near the pub and walk down the War Memorial.

We start the walk at 10AM sharp. (Please ensure you're at the start point at least 10 mins beforehand).

The area is shown better in the Map link

Walking grading: Moderate (Height gain 122m)

Dog friendliness: Mostly open countyside, some road walking

Estimated walk end time: 1:30PM

Lunch

For lunch afterwards, we will looking to get in at the Red Lion (tbc) but places may be limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

If you would like to go to lunch, please reply to the "Reply below using the Reply button if you would like a place for lunch --------v" Post below.

If I don't see a request I will assume "No" for lunch.

Car Share
We like to reduce the impact on the areas we visit and its sometimes difficult to find places with adequate parking, so we encourage lift shares with our regular drivers.

If you need a lift, please post below indicating that you'd like a lift and from which general part of Oxford and surrounding villages you would like to get picked up. There is sometimes a better chance of being picked up from one of the Park & Rides as people use the ring road en-route. There are some guidance notes on our message boards here.

Please ask for a lift ASAP even if your on the waiting list when you do so as the list is constantly changing.

Donations

We would welcome a donation of around £1 towards ongoing overhead costs associated with the Meetup service and ancillary costs.

We would be grateful if this was done before the start of the walk.

For new members or walkers, please read the Walkers Guide thread in the forum.

Thanks for meeting us after the start Derek. A lovely afternoon out. Thank Gawd the rain held off too. Hee hee hee, struggled to get out of my chair in that Waterside Bistro thing. (After my chicken burger, with chips & added bacon & cheese, THREE glasses of fizzy pop and an extra large cappuchino)! YUM YUM YUM...

A bonus to miss the much forecast rain on this lovely walk of great panoramic views, historic sites and picturesque villages. Good to have some new members along to join in with the crowd. If only we didn't have to cross so many busy roads. A nice meal had at the Waterfront Cafe to round off the day.

Hi Derek, would you be able to recommend a way of walking to the venue (ie, a footpath away from the road) from somewhere like Wallingford or Benson? I haven't bothered checking the bus times (from Reading) as yet but if there's no bus (please ensure you're at the start point at least 10 mins beforehand), it'll have to be Cholsey & Moulsford rail station.

The drop-off for Greenmere is near a telephone box. If you carry on along the pavement with houses to your left, within 100 yards you'll meet the footpath that straddles the road. We'll see you there.

I am planning to drive from West Oxford (where I live). I could easily pick people up at Redbridge Park and and Ride if that helps. Equally happy to meet someone there and travel in their car.

There's a bus arriving Wallingford about 9:50. Hopefully if I can get on the walk, I'd ask if anyone driving from Oxford via A4074 can pick up in the centre of Wallingford. It's then about 5 mins drive to walk. If not I'll jojn John on the bus and we'll run after you! Thanks as always to everyone who offers lifts. Sue
