Walk - Shotover, Wheatley & Forest Hill Circular - 6.5 Miles

  • Oct 6, 2013 · 10:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

This one is pretty straight forward for the Oxford locals as it starts from the Thornhill Park & Ride on the eastern Oxford A40 in the Sandhills / Risinghurst area. There are a few sharp or prolonged inclines over the walk so a reasonable level of fitness is needed.

We walk up through Risinghurst and up to Shotover Hill with potentially some lovely views over East Oxford at the top before walking along the ridge and a long downhill stretch into Wheatley. We walk past the old village lock-up in Wheatley (a momentary pause to have a gander, its the structure in the picture) and then over the bridge past Wheatley Park School and into open country side and onto Forest Hill with a good chance of seeing many of the Monkjack deer that inhabit the area.

Through Forest Hill we again go across country and back to Sandhills before using the subway to get back to the Park & Ride.

Note: RSVP's don't open until 6pm on 29th September.

Start Point

We meet in Thornhill Park & Ride Car Park near the exit which is reached by entering the car park and following the arrows around towards the exit (Zone B). It's shown in the top left of the car park in this Google Map link(use Satellite view). Car Parking should be free and there are ample buses from the City Centre.

We start the walk at 10AM sharp. (Please ensure you're at the start point at least 10 mins beforehand).

Walking grading: Moderate (Height gain 110m)

Dog friendliness: Mostly arable land but possibly some cattle and there are some paths and moderately busy roads to walk along.

Estimated walk end time: 12:45PM

Lunch

For lunch afterwards, we will visiting a local pub, possibly in Headington (tbc).

If you would like to go to lunch, please reply to the "Reply below using the Reply button if you would like a place for lunch --------v" Post below.

If I don't see a request I will assume "No" for lunch.

Car Share

We like to reduce the impact on the areas we visit and its sometimes difficult to find places with adequate parking, so we encourage lift shares with our regular drivers.

If you need a lift, please post below indicating that you'd like a lift and from which general part of Oxford and surrounding villages you would like to get picked up. There is sometimes a better chance of being picked up from one of the Park & Rides as people use the ring road en-route. There are some guidance notes on our message boards here.

Please ask for a lift ASAP even if your on the waiting list when you do so as the list is constantly changing.

Donations

We normally would welcome a donation of around £1 towards ongoing overhead costs associated with the Meetup service and ancillary costs, but during August & September we are NOT taking donations. This is the last walk that falls into this period.

For new members or walkers, please read the Walkers Guide thread in the forum.

Lovely warm, sunny day, great walk and superb lunch. What more does one need on a Sunday?
