Walk - Winchcombe - Belas Knap - 5.25 miles

This walks starts from the self proclaimed Walking Capital of the Cotswolds.

This scenic and interesting little walk takes you from the delightfully unspoilt town of Winchcombe, along Cotswold Way routes old and new, and up to one of the area’s most intriguing ancient monuments, Belas Knap.

This Neolithic long barrow, or burial chamber, is surrounded by many myths and legends. The first recorded excavation took place in 1863, and since then hundreds of human bones have been uncovered, some of which date back over 6,000 years. It is one of the most intriguing and iconic structures in the Cotswolds, and an excellent place to pause and soak up the past.

Further along the walk we should have good views of Sudeley Castle and its magnificent gardens. Built in the 15th century on the site of an older house, the Castle's chapel is the resting place of Catherine Parr, the 6th wife of Henry VIII.

NOTE: RSVP's open at 9am on 6th April.

Start Point

We meet in the largest car park in Winchcombe which is situated just off Back Lane and is located behind the town Library and NHS Outpatient Centre. The car park costs £1 for all day parking.

The area is better and shown in this Map Link

We start the walk at 10AM sharp. (Please ensure you're at the start point at least 10 mins beforehand).

Walking grading: Moderate (height gain unknown - some steep sections and stiles).

Dog friendliness: unknown - mostly open countryside with some quiet roads.

Estimated walk end time: 13:00 - 13:15 PM

Lunch

For lunch afterwards, we will visiting a local pub, either the Corner Cupboard Inn or the White Hart Inn (tbc)

If you would like to go to lunch, please post a request for a place at lunch below --------v.

If I don't see a request I will assume "No" for lunch. I will confirm list of attendees once I've booked with the pub....please check your on it!

Car Share

We like to reduce the impact on the areas we visit and its sometimes difficult to find places with adequate parking, so we encourage lift shares with our regular drivers.

If you need a lift, please post below indicating that you'd like a lift and from which general part of Oxford and surrounding villages you would like to get picked up. There is sometimes a better chance of being picked up from one of the Park & Rides as people use the ring road en-route. There are some guidance notes on our message boards here.

Please ask for a lift ASAP even if your on the waiting list when you do so as the list is constantly changing.

Donations

We would welcome a donation of around £1 towards ongoing overhead costs associated with the Meetup service and ancillary costs.

A long journey but worth the trek to see the Cotswolds at their best. Winchcombe very pretty and the surrounding patch work fields on rolling hills feels very different to our usual walks. The big initial incline worth the effort to see the large panoramic views. A lovely filling lunch had at the surprisingly large Corner Cupboard. Good company as always ... almost goes without saying!
