Joint Evening Walk - Marsh Baldon - 4 miles

Evening Walks

This is a joint walk run together with the WOW group and is open to members of both groups.

Walk Background

This short walk links the villages of Toot Baldon, Marsh Baldon and Nuneham Coutenay, the first two being ancient settlements with Nuneham being a mere stripling, having been relocated by the first Earl Harcourt in the 18th century.

The village green at Marsh Baldon is about 24 acres and probably owes its survival to the winter flooding of the stream that runs across the middle. It was once ringed by no fewer than 14 ponds, but nowadays only 2 or 3 survive, with the school pond being noted for an unusual visiter in the summer of 1960 in the shape of a Rednecked Phalarope (only 6 of these rare waders have ever been seen in the county).

The unfenced road across the green runs through the outfield of the cricket pitch, and there can't be many pitches where incoming batsmen have to 'stop, look and listen' on their way to the crease.

This walk visits lanes and paths between all 3 villages, crosses the busy A4074 at two points in Nuneham Courtenay, navigates a few fields and also passes through the very pretty churchyard at Toot Baldon.

Start Point

We meet in the car park of The Seven Stars, Marsh Baldon (as shown in the place link above).

We start the walk at 7PM sharp. (Please try to ensure you're at the start point at least 5 mins beforehand).

Level of difficulty: Easy

Dog friendliness: mainly on lead or under control (fair bit of road sections on country lanes)

Estimated walk end time: 8:45PM

Drinks After Walk

Afterwards, we will visiting The Seven Stars for a drink, if enough people want to, but it's not obligatory.

These evening walks are free although we would welcome a small(ish) donation, which goes towards ongoing overhead costs associated with the Meetup service and ancillary costs, or/and you could buy the walk leader a drink too.

I'm surprised by the level of growth I've seen since becoming an organizer, it's given me more confidence in my abilities.
