Walk Background

Dorchester is steeped in history. On the surface it seems to represent the quintessential English village, inhabited by commuters and retired professionals. But there is much more to it than quaint winding streets and rows of chocolate-box cottages. The Romans built an important town here, Dororcina, though its ramparts are now only faintly recognisable, and the present abbey stands on the site of the first Saxon cathedral in Wessex. Excavations have revealed a number of Roman artefacts in the locality - among them an altar to Jupiter and Augustus, various tessellated pavements and some Roman coins. Who knows what other relics of their occupation may lie beneath the surface.

This walk visits field and woodland paths and tracks, a stretch of Thames Path and main road with pavements.

Start Point

We meet at the parking area on Bridge End in Dorchester (as shown in the place link above).

We start the walk at 7PM sharp. (Please try to ensure you're at the start point at least 5 mins beforehand).

Good walk, good people, especially Beth, good dog (Wilf). Thanks for making me feel welcome. Hope to meet you and more of you next time. The Binsey Lane walk is in my neck of the woods, so no excuse for missing it. Glynis

Late walk, however still too early for me when caught in (actually interesting) work sessions. Hopefully one other day I can join...

Does anyone know if The Fleur de Lys in Dorchester does food on weekday evenings? If they do, i'm well up for an evening meal in there, after the walk. Anyone else intetested? I've had numerous Sunday dinners in there and they've all been TOP notch! (Or should that be top nosh)?

The website says they serve from 7 - 9 pm. I won't be eating though.

Hmmm... Thanks Beth. I'd like to stay for a meal, if anyone else would? I understand that it's a 'school night' though. Staying after 21:30(ish) makes it more of a challenge, getting home for me, as that's the last bus, back to Reading. So, i'll only stay if anyone else would like to. I'll have a look at this forum Wednesday afternoon and make a decision on train/bus tickets to buy then.

I'm looking for a lift from Oxford, as can't make the walk without one...
