Another one of our regular hackspace meets :) Bring your project along and get hacking.

Format

6 hours – relaxed, unstructured collaboration and learning, come and go as you please. Help others or ask for help with your project.

Micro talks on the hour - Starting from 1pm. Get up and speak about your project (or another topic of interest) for 10 minutes. This is optional, but we hope this will help get people together.

What to bring

Enjoyed seeing the wide array of things being worked on, from pro's to keen new-comers. Also, got in touch with a teacher I'd met at the OzBerryPi-Edu meetup, and will hopefully run a day-course on RPi with her at an education centre! I must confess that I was a bit slack in doing my own work there this time, so more to do before next time :)

Hi, I am going tomorrow to take a look with my laptop. Just a quick question: I already have a 16 GB card, can the board handle it?, or are there some hardware limitations on the board that force you to use an 8 GB card?. I guess it should be fine, but if not, I would just buy an extra 8 GB one.

    1 · August 30, 2013

    • Andrew S.

Hi! any size over 4GB will work. 8GB class 10 is a sweet spot in regards to price vs performance thats all :)

      August 31, 2013

    • Alexander N.

I find that I get problems sometimes with 4GB SD cards, plus, you get more space to install packages and place your own files on it :). AFAIK the RasPi can take up to 128GB cards, although I doubt that you'd need that much (except if you're running a NAS and don't want external storage).

  • Oda S.

I've ordered an raspberry pi board with a 8gb card from element14, but unfortunately I was advised that it will arrive here only on monday. So, I wanna ask you if there is some problem to go to the meet without the equipment, just to know you and take a look in what you are doing, will I be annoying? Thank you!

    1 · August 30, 2013

    • Alexander N.

Hello Oda! As always, we welcome new members! You do not require equipment (other than a 8GB SD card + laptop) to attend. You are most welcome to just come in and spectate. I can guarantee you will feel immersed! Hope to see you there.

      1 · August 30, 2013

    • Oda S.

Thanks Alexander, I bought the memory card and will be there tomorrow!

Last month I was tinkering with the Raspberry Pi Arduino crust, and I've asked the guys at Ninja Blocks, and I can put a few in the "shop" for purchase. (PS. these are from a small run done by the factory, they will soon be doing the big run to then sell on our website).
While I'm there tomorrow, I'll be tinkering with Scratch+GPIO (http://cymplecy.wordpress.com/2013/04/22/scratch-gpio-version-2-introduction-for-beginners/) aiming towards some projects with school teachers.

I am looking for a project to start with my year 7's&9's. I teach 70 year 7's and 104 year 9's. I thought using Minecraft on the Pi would b a good start. Ordered my Pi over a week ago but it has not arrived. Will come to get ideas.

    2 · August 29, 2013

As Andrew said, I did a presentation @ the Powerhouse Museum on the Minecraft API. I'd be happy to share resources or do the talk again on Saturday. :)

Will be bringing my Pi and a DIY Arduino (looking to breadboard an FTDI Basic https://www.sparkfun.com/products/9716 to make it programmable... so any help there would be much appreciated). Looking forward to meeting everyone :)

It's up to you- whichever you feel more comfortable with. After all, nobody will force you to use either of them!

      August 28, 2013

    • Andrew S.

Like Alex says OS is up to you. However from experience I can say that you may find things a little more straight forward if you are already on a Debian based Linux distro. Ubuntu is a good choice.

What's the parking like in the area? Meter parking? Parking area? Or better to catch the train?

    August 28, 2013

    • Andrew S.

Parking depends on the day (I drive) some spots are ticketed some are unrestricted... however the safe bet is the train, It's only a short walk from central.

      August 28, 2013

    • Andrew S.

Yep Dave is correct, Redfern is closer, as is the bus. :)

I haven't actually purchased a raspberry pi yet, I've been meaning too. Does anybody know if there is a physical shop in Sydney or Melbourne where I can go in and pick one up? Is there any point in coming to the meet-up if i don't have one? Note: I'm a developer, but haven't worked with raspberry pi yet and am interested in learning.

    1 · August 27, 2013

    • Ross M.

      A) I dont think there is a shop where you can get a RaPi. But it is only Tuesday, if you order from Elements14 now you just may get it tomorrow (Wednesday), and are certain to get it on Thursday. But order it now. Be sure to buy the HDMI to VGA adapter if you need one, and a 4Gb or 8Gb SD card, you might as well get the pre installed Elements14 one.

      August 27, 2013

    • Ross M.

      B) It would be definitely worthwhile to come to the meetup without a RaPi. You will see what other people are doing, and various expansion boards etc, bound to give you ideas

I do't think I have actually worked on my Pi at a meetup yet! There are always too many other projects to complete.

Too little time, so much tinkering to do! :)

I just got a "Popcorn Hour A-100" donated to me yesterday. I'll be bringing it along to hack! :)

Hello people, It as has been pointed out to me that this meetup clashes with Fathers day (Sept 1st). Plan is to move it to Saturday the 31st. Sorry for any inconvenience.
