About This Class

This class is an introduction to Data-Driven Documents, a javascript library for web visualization by Mike Bostock. In this class we will cover questions like:

  • What is D3?
  • What is data?
  • What is a document?
  • How do I stay up-to-date with the latest changes to D3?


We will create a simple visualization to see how D3 is used for the following tasks:

  • Loading and parsing data
  • Creating quantitative scales
  • Visualizing data
  • Creating axes
  • Transitioning data with animation

A basic to intermediate understanding of HTML and JavaScript is required to get the most out of this class. This class will cover advanced material in a flexible, discussion-oriented format. Participants are expected to have some prior knowledge of Javascript. Since D3 uses advanced JavaScript and HTML5 techniques, we may get into fairly technical discussions based on the interest and questions of those participating. Overall, the focus will be more on design than coding.

About your teacher

Kai Chang organizes the Bay Area d3.js Meetup group and works as a freelance visualization developer. He's an active participant on the d3-js mailing list, answering questions, engaging other users, and creating examples on bl.ocks.

His current project is an open-source parallel coordinates library for multidimensional visualization.
