What we’re about
Almost every Sunday (please check our calendar) we offer a class on meditation instruction and practice. The class generally practices "calm abiding" (shiney/samatha) meditation, which is the art of calming the mind as taught in Tibetan Buddhism. We also investigate "insight" (lag-tong/vipashyana), the meditation practice that enables deeper insight into the nature of self and the world to positively transform our relationship with ourselves and with others. No experience is needed. All are welcome, including you.
We follow the teachings of the Palyul Lineage of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism. Visit our website at http://www.palyuldc.org/

All the infinite activities of the Bodhisattvas can be condensed into the so-called Six Transcendent Perfections. “Transcendent” because they are a means for “reaching the other side, a state beyond misery,” in the words of Khenpo Ngawang Pelzang. You are cordially invited to join our two-part discussion of The Six Perfections on Sunday, April 21st and 28th. The 90-minute online classes begin at 8:30 a.m. [ET] on both Sundays.
In our weekly classes, we explore the richly variegated jewel that is Tibetan Buddhist doctrine or liturgy, including a short meditation or two. There is plenty of time for Q-&-A. All who are reading this message are warmly invited.

“The Tibetan word 'jin-lab' is loosely translated as ‘blessings.’ Jin-lap transforms our whole being—our body, our speech, the way we think, how we understand phenomena, and the way we relate to ourselves and the world. Ultimately, however, what jin-lap does is to break the shell of our ego and force us to see the true nature of our minds. Among the many other causes and conditions, in the Vajrayana it is the guru who is considered the most important and indeed supreme cause for doing all of the above.” -Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche, “Ocean of Blessings” (p. vii)
“If we had pure perception from the beginning, we wouldn’t need to train in it. However, at present our mind is filled with disturbing emotions, our way of perceiving is very obscured, and we lack pure perception. Therefore, we need to train in pure perception.” -His Holiness Penor Rinpoche, “Ocean of Blessing” (pp. 9-11)

The great meditation master Kamalashila said that without meditation, one will never know the nature of reality. Our minds are habituated to complexity, and so meditation is difficult to practice because it is so simple. In today’s meeting (May 5th) we’ll discuss the basic techniques of calming and training the mind that we may abide in equipoise. Please Join Us! Our 90-minute online class begins at 8:30 a.m. [ET].

Our monthly Book Study Group meets today, May 12th, to discuss is In Love with the World by Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche. In this book, Mingyur Rinpoche recounts his four years spent as a wandering yogi after leaving his position as the respected abbot of three monasteries. He quickly discovers that his Buddhist education had not prepared him to live off the land as a homeless mendicant. Mingyur Rinpoche is a Tibetan teacher and master of the Karma Kagyu and Nyingma schools of Tibetan Buddhism. He began his study and practice at an early age under the Dzogchen master Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche, who was his father. Today's meeting is part two of two; the part one was on April 14th. Our Book Study Group meets every month as part of our Sunday morning program and is open to all who are interested.
In our weekly classes, we explore the richly variegated jewel that is Tibetan Buddhist doctrine or liturgy, including a short meditation or two. There is plenty of time for Q-&-A. All who are reading this message are warmly invited.
