The Health Care Movie

Come to Kailash Ecovillage to see a screening of the movie and a discussion afterwards.

The Health Care Movie

This documentary provides the real story of how the health care systems in Canada and the United States evolved to be so completely different, when at one point they were essentially the same. Most people under the age of 50, in both countries, are not aware of the intensity of the political struggle that led to the universal medical care system in Canada. Nor are they aware of the public relations campaigns, still active today, that have been prevalent in the United States since the early 1900’s to dissuade the public from supporting national health care.

A good movie exposing a lot of the fear-mongering that has gone into the campaign against universal health care in the US, and debunked their criticism of the Canadian system.
One of the main points made was that Canada's system was achieved by broad popular demand in just one province, and had to overcome a concerted effort by doctors to prevent it. Once established the entire nation saw its benefits, so it was adopted with provincial variations by the entire nation. This suggests that we here in Oregon could achieve similar results if people broadly united behind the idea and make our voices heard.

The film (narrated by Kiefer Sutherland) also happens to feature film footage shot by - and interviews with - a PSU student. I happen to be that student, and a member of this meetup group. Exciting to get an invite to another screening of my own film! I'm not sure what my schedule is next week, but I might try and swing by. Thanks for screening it!
