Intentional Communities Seed Group

The Portland Intentional Community Seed Group Meeting

Get together with other individuals interested in intentional community Wednesday 1/16/13 from 7pm to 9pm at the Kailash Ecovillage, 4311 SE 37th Ave., Portland, Oregon 97202.

Discussion topics are determined by a democratic vote at the beginning of the meeting, so come prepared with a topic or two you’d like to discuss. One topic that is coming to this month’s meeting is: “Should we continue to have a city-wide meeting, or narrow the focus to neighborhoods or quadrants?”

You’re invited to bring finger food to share. Out of respect for Kailash policies, please bring only vegan foods and remove your shoes as you enter the meeting space.

The purpose of this seed group is to form connections with others interested in intentional community of all types, from ecovillages to community supported agriculture projects, either rural or urban. We will not focus on any one project, but share information, resources, and provide a space for people with similar vision to meet and talk. We meet the 3rd Wednesday of each month, space permitting.

Portland Intentional Community Seed Meeting is an incubator group with a vision to foster the birth and growth of Intentional Communities all over the Pacific Northwest and around the world. We desire to form connections with others interested in intentional community of all types, from ecovillages to community supported agriculture projects to neighborhood collectives, either rural or urban. We will not focus on any one project, but share information, resources, and provide a space for people with similar vision to meet and talk. Our hope is that this group will inspire the formation of many projects, and any project groups that form may end up meeting more or less frequently at their own discretion.

Some of the topics we’ve discussed:
What is a “shared value”?
The importance of shared values.
How to inspire others to commit to taking action on shared values.
What is the scope of “community”?

We hold meetings the 3rd Wednesday of each month, and welcome volunteer facilitators so we can enjoy many different perspectives at our meetings.

It was fun to have a big turnout. With all the momentum I think that we should organize some action based projects like organizing a resource exchange coop.

I just wanted to add that the reason I came to the meeting, and would like to attend more meetings on intentional communities, is to connect with as many people as possible who are interested in forming actual physical ecofriendly intentional communities in which to live, whatever shapes they may take. If subsequent meetups that are posted as being about this but end up being about or involving some other topics or activities as their main focus, then that may not be so interesting to me and I will hope that someone else (I have enough on my plate to organize this) would organize more meetups with living in intentional community as their focus.

I understand that this meetup group is about sustainability and green living, and thus a lot of things fall under that banner. I'm just saying I'd enjoy it if there were continued get togethers to simply discuss the whole topic of creating physical intentional communities.

Hi Everyone! I joined the meetup group so I could connect with you all. It was so great to meet all of you this week and I look forward to more productive meetings in the future. I'm working on planning a gathering of some sort to get some of these projects in action but need to do some research for a bit and find out what would work for this season. I really want to do some farm visits soon and focus on food prep and storage. So any ideas you guys? I'm thinking a pickling night might be fun. Anyone interested in learning how to pickle?

Also I keep forgetting to mention I'm REALLY into fermented foods right now and going to start experimenting with some recipes soon. Anyone else interested in this? We are also going to attempt our own Kombucha soon as well. It would be cool to have a group to discuss the trials and errors and victories.. and try out some different varieties!

good discussion...perhaps we all could do a little better at not cross-talking...not sure how everyone felt by the end of the night...can't change the world in one meetup....all the best to you all...looking forward to the next debate...

i'm interested in this kind of thing, but portland in general has been very hard to network.
could that be a topic? just how to network in this area a little more effectively for a family looking for community?
also, could we have the iFarmOregon organization be a topic? if so, we may be able to attend a meeting. :)

“Should we continue to have a city-wide meeting"

    No.

"or narrow the focus to neighborhoods or quadrants?”

Yes. I'd attend this meeting if it were closer to me (i.e. SW Portland/Tigard/Beaverton/Tualatin).
