Announcing a new event for The Portland Travel Meetup Group! What: Sailing in the San Juan Islands, June 18th to 25th, 2008
When: Wednesday, June 18, 5:00 PM
Event fee: $650 per personThis cruise is being offered to our Travel Meetup Group by a private couple Sharon and Dan Donegan. Financial arrangements will be directly with them and not through the group and you should satisfy yourself with the quality and safety of the cruise.
Our 2008 sailing cruise to the San Juan and Canadian Gulf islands is scheduled for Wednesday, June 18th through noon on Wednesday, the 25th. The plan is to board the night of the 18th, around 5:00 PM, with a departure from Flounder Bay in Anacortes around noon on Thursday the 19th. We will return to Flounder Bay at noon on the 25th.
There will be eight of us aboard for the week. The captain and navigator are Yours Truly; there will be room for six others. The boat has four small staterooms, each with its own head and the arrangements will be double occupancy. Sailing experience is a plus but not a requirement. This is a working cruise: sailing, cooking, and cleaning are all on the agenda.
Some nights we will anchor in a cove and other nights we will tie up at a village. The days will be spent sailing among the islands with time on land. A sailing cruise can be a wonderful vacation but you have to be careful as to what you mean by a ?vacation?. There is not much time laying around resting. The cruise will be an active week. Everything on a boat can be a new experience, from lighting the oven to taking a shower. If proper procedures aren?t followed, things can become embarrassing or worse. For crew members without experience, the first part of the cruise is a learning period with lots of hands on instruction. And we do have an orientation meeting.
The number one job of the captain and navigator is the safety of the ship and crew. The second is to see that the crew has fun. Sometimes these jobs conflict. With eight people on board, activities have to be structured, at least during the day and we actually post a schedule for rotating the crew duties. That being said, on this cruise, there will also be time for you to do some hiking, shopping, and exploring in the waterfront towns. After the boat is anchored or moored to a dock in the late afternoon, crew life will become more relaxed.
We plan to charter "Sienne", a Jeanneau 50. To that end, we want to get our reservation in as early as possible even if it ties up our 30% deposit for over five months. The estimated cost per person will be approximately $650 which includes most meals. There is a $200 deposit and the $450 balance is due on April 15th 2008. Everyone on board pays the same share.
Please call with your questions, and/or to make a deposit for the trip,
