Fiasco, a Storytelling RPG

From the Bully Pulpit Games website:

"Fiasco is a game about ordinary people with powerful ambition and poor impulse control. There will be big dreams and flawed execution. It won’t go well for them, to put it mildly, and in the end it will probably all go south in a glorious heap of jealousy, murder, and recrimination. It’s designed to be played in a single session, usually around two and a half hours, with no prep."

If you haven't seen, heard of or played Fiasco, you're in for a treat.  It's likened to being in your very own Coen brothers film.  I'd like to make this an ongoing Meetup, so hopefully there will be enough interest in the game to do so.

The setup:

Gameplay, part 1:

Gameplay, part 2:

From our good friends at Shut Up and Sit Down, Paul and Quinns, here's a review:

Please familiarize yourself with the various playsets that are available online (there are some links below) and leave a comment if there are any specific ones you'd like us to consider.  Otherwise, I'll just bring two or three to choose from and we'll go from there.

If you commit to this Meetup, and haven't played before, again, please familiarize yourself with the links above.

First-timers and old-hands are equally welcome.  We'll support one another, and no-one needs to feel self-conscious or embarrassed by a lack of experience or the choices we make throughout the session.  There is no GM, no "director"...  we'll all guide this rudderless ship.  There will be some signposts along the way to point us in a general direction, but we'll be charting new territory with every session we play.

Fiasco isn't a game for everyone (how many games are, really?).  You've got to be willing to put yourself out there and throw yourself into a character and scenario, do some improvising and tap into your creativity.  It's a game like no other, and you'll get out of it what you're willing to contribute.  If you're committed to the "adventure of it all", then this could be one of the most satisfying, unique gaming experiences you've ever had.  Thinking (and playing) outside the box has NEVER been this much fun!

Please comment below or email me with any questions, ideas or observations.  See you at the darkly comic intersection of lust, greed and fear.

FYI:  There will be alcohol involved; a leisurely (yet exciting), slightly drunken evening of Fiasco. 21 and older only, please!

We bit off a lot for our first Fiasco, but everyone, and I mean EVERYONE was integral to making this the fun success it was. The cast was: Randal/Sam Dumas (that's Dew-MAH), Producer at News Channel Six - has a gun in his desk. Fiona/Cristle Spade, the calculating in-over-her head-on-so-many-levels Ad Executive. Shawn/Harry Getwell, PA to News Channel Six's absent, coked-out Anchorman, Chance Barlow. Erik/Tommy Shinealighton, News Reporter and Bleeding Heart Liberal, conflicted by a desire to better himself. Andrea/Rita Venom, the drug-pushing Camerawoman who can't frame a shot to save her life, yet holds sway over several key players at News Channel Six. Joel/Jayk Steele, a fame-hungry, Anchor wannabe whose good looks (almost) make up for his lack of on-air talent. Also Sam's husband.
See you at Sunday Night Reset in December!
    Many thanks and much love,
p.s. - thanks to Joel for learning the rules so well and being willing to help facilitate! You rock!

Could I request a non-war themed story? Those plots tend to make me tune out in movies. I skimmed the scenario list, and I think some fun ones could be News Channel Six, Hollywood Wives and Return to Camp Death. But most of them seem pretty fun to try.

BTW, I posted the original "Camp Death" link, as I thought we could save the "Return to Camp Death" for the sequel. :-)

Haha, see, when I saw the two Camp Deaths I thought playing the sequel would be more fun. Then in true horror movie style we could do a prequel later to justify the first plot.

The girls will still be within the span of their chickenpox, so I'll be home with them until at least Tuesday. Sorry, all!

Sorry to hear, Benjamin. If this takes off, there will be more sessions in the future. Hope the girls fare well!

Sorry, couldn't get the day off of work, so I'm hosting it after work instead.

I've heard a lot about this system, and I think it'd be a damn fine time, considering Randal's friends I've met so far. :)
