Box Canyon & Reymert

Since the weather is getting much warmer, it makes sense to begin by restating the reminder recently posted by Jim for the Wickenburg Mts. trip. As always, bring a lot of extra water, shade, first aid kit, CB radio, extraction gear, tools, chair(s) for the lunch stop, camera, and whatever else you might need in case of an emergency in the desert. Don't forget to bring water and stay hydrated!

The route, about 32 miles total, will take us from Florence east on Price Rd., then north through Box Canyon, and continue north on Mineral Mt. Rd. with a side trip to the ruins of Reymert.

According to Wells, 2nd ed, the majority of Box Canyon is rated moderate with the exception of one ledge that is rated difficult. "Aggressive stock SUVs with good ground clearance can do it."

Wells rates Mineral Mt. Rd. easy & the Reymert side trip moderate. The Reymert Historic Site features ruins of an old mining town.

IMPORTANT - A portion of this trip crosses Arizona State Trust Land, so make sure that your Arizona State Land Department (ASLD) Recreation Permit is up-to-date. I will not be checking permits, it is your responsibility to make sure you have a valid permit for this trip.

If you need a permit or need to renew here is the link to the ASLD website:

http://www.azland.gov/programs/natural/recreation_permit.htm

In anticipation of FAQs, the usual experience members have had in obtaining a permit is:

If you print & mail the permit application along with your payment to the ASLD it usually takes 3 working days to receive the permit in the mail.

If you go to the ASLD office in Phoenix during business hours with the completed application and payment you can usually walk out with the permit.

As we drove into Box Canyon, a sheriff told us they were looking for an older gentleman with dementia driving a white Toyota Four Runner. He had been missing since the night before and spent the night in the desert. Earlier in the day, the sheriff had talked to the man and knew where he was, but the man kept driving around after making contact making it difficult for the sheriff to find the man.

On our way up the canyon, we happened to see a man walking out of a side wash. He was the man they were looking for. He was doing OK, was coherent, and had been drinking plenty of water. Mary Ann gave him a sandwich.

On the way out, we came across no trespassing signs on Cottonwood Canyon Road and a gate [masked],[masked]). The new owner has closed off the road across his private property. Apparently, there is a bypass if you know where it is. We talked to the owner and he let us through the gate because of the situation. He said he will open the gate for emergencies. I've read there are some agencies working with the new owner and the AZVJC is following this. However, when we went by he was fortifying the wash with large rocks because his cattle exit his property through the wash. He was fortifying because a wire fence he had previously erected was cut down.

After some of us sat around talking afterwards, we found the sheriff knows the man. This was the third time he went missing. The sheriff was going to with the man's wife about the vehicle keys. Lastly, the man had been to a Search and Rescue meeting the night before and went missing while driving home from the meeting.

Some irony and a couple of humorous moments along the way, but mostly a sad situation for the man and his family. It was good of this group to change our day's plans and help out. Thanks to everyone who helped out and stuck with us as we got things sorted out.

I have to add a large thank you & congratulations to everyone on the trip for their unanimous agreement to divert from our trip plans and to support the DPS & Pinal Sheriff's Office personnel in their rescue & retrieval efforts. The way everyone pitched in was inspiring and commendable. A great bunch of people to be out in the desert with!

Loved the water fall climb and enjoyed driving into Box Canyon. Next time I bring bee and bug spray. Didn't seem hot until we were airing up and I was glad for that. Thanks to the Sheriff for the short cut. Have to keep that contact. Was impressed with PEV4x4 for support in rescue of in trouble traveler.

We just enjoyed a weekend of camping we are thinking about camping after this run on saturday night. Anybody else interested? There is a trail off of Oak Flat campground rated difficult according to AZ Backroads. Listed as Hackberry Creek. The campground is just east of Superior. No Fee to camp.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
