Rice Peak (Weather permitting)

I have requested voluntary RSVP withdrawals for this event to get the group total down to 6.  Anyone on the waiting list has been removed.  Please check your email in box for updates sent.

Rice peak is on the north side of Mt. Lemmon in Tucson. This trail starts in Oracle and follows Old Mt. Lemmon road to the Peppersauce campground turnoff where the trail begins.  According to Wells it is difficult in spots.  Tucson Rough Riders 4x4 club calls it moderate. I am going to call it a 3.5 rated trail that climbs to an elevation of 7500 ft.  It is on page 166 in the second edition Wells book.  I have been on the first part of this trail years ago with this group on a Mt Lemmon run.  I have an ulterior motive for this particular run.  It is a prerun for me for a 4x4 Ham run I am leading here later in the month.  This will be a long run because of the travel time to Oracle and home.  Recent rains or snow will cancel this run.  If you would like to meet us in Oracle instead of Florence, send me an email and I will give you time and place.

From Montana Mountain all the way to Rice Peak! It was really cool to be able to make simplex contact over such a long distance at low power and have such strong, clear communication. Really added to the day, thanks Steve.

Sorry we had to bail at the trailhead! However, Mary's purse was successfully recovered in tact at McDonald's!

The weather is not looking good for this trip. As of this morning (Wednesday) there is 18" of snow with more expected. I called the Ranger service this morning and if there is snow on the ground and/or a muddy mess come March 1st, it will not re-open. If that is the case this run will be postponed until April 27th.

"Weather permitting" . The Forest service closes Old Mt. Lemmon road for the winter from 12/15 to 3/1. Weather permitting it will open up on time. Weather not permitting it will remain closed and this trip will be posponed until April. Just a heads up.

Being unfamilar with the latter parts of this trail is the reason I have limited this run to 12. My penchant for making wrong turns on narrow trails is almost guaranteed to happen. :). I would love to see everyone be able to go on this run. Lets see how the group plays out as the run gets closer.

On any given run we almost always have two, usually three or more. We keep one in the front either leading or directly behind and one in the rear. This way we are insured of solid reliable communication throughout the entire group. My call sign is K7AZS. You might see mine or others in some postings around the site. Sometimes you will see in run comments: CB channel 4, HAM 147.520. This is the frequency we use on our runs. You can visit 4x4ham.com to learn more. This is the group that most of us are in. There are many other online resources as well, just search "ham radio" Probably too much information, I know.
