Is the Universe Infinite?
The Universe is commonly defined as the totality of existence, including planets, stars, galaxies, the content of intergalactic space, the smallest subatomic particles, and all the matter and energy.
The observable universe is about 46 billion light years in radius, and is expanding at an accelerating rate. The Big Bang theory is the prevailing cosmological model that describes the early development of the Universe, which is calculated to have begun 13.8 billion years ago.
There are many competing theories about the ultimate fate of the universe. Physicists remain unsure about what, if anything, preceded the Big Bang. Many refuse to speculate, doubting that any information from any such prior state could ever be accessible. There are various multiverse hypotheses, in which some physicists have suggested that the Universe might be one among many or even an infinite number of universes that likewise exist.
What do we mean by ‘infinity’- is it extremely large, or beyond/ outside space? Similarly, is ‘eternity’ a very long time, or beyond/outside time?
What of the non physical universe (if any)? Is there an infinite mind? Is there an infinite or eternal metaphysical universe?
In the Eastern tradition, there is a model of creation that has 3 levels of existence- causal (consciousness), subtle (mind), and gross (physical). The causal level is said to be infinite and eternal. The universe that we experience arises from it, and ultimately goes back to it, and is therefore finite (and therefore said to be an illusion).
What are our thoughts and experience of infinity................?
