Is the Universe Infinite?

Is the Universe Infinite?

The Universe is commonly defined as the totality of existence, including planets, stars, galaxies, the content of intergalactic space, the smallest subatomic particles, and all the matter and energy.

The observable universe is about 46 billion light years in radius, and is expanding at an accelerating rate.  The Big Bang theory is the prevailing cosmological model that describes the early development of the Universe, which is calculated to have begun 13.8 billion years ago.

There are many competing theories about the ultimate fate of the universe. Physicists remain unsure about what, if anything, preceded the Big Bang. Many refuse to speculate, doubting that any information from any such prior state could ever be accessible. There are various multiverse hypotheses, in which some physicists have suggested that the Universe might be one among many or even an infinite number of universes that likewise exist.

What do we mean by ‘infinity’- is it extremely large, or beyond/ outside space? Similarly, is ‘eternity’ a very long time, or beyond/outside time?

What of the non physical universe (if any)? Is there an infinite mind? Is there an infinite or eternal metaphysical universe?

In the Eastern tradition, there is a model of creation that has 3 levels of existence- causal (consciousness), subtle (mind), and gross (physical). The causal level is said to be infinite and eternal. The universe that we experience arises from it, and ultimately goes back to it, and is therefore finite (and therefore said to be an illusion).

What are our thoughts and experience of infinity................?

I have to apologise. I just came back from overnight camping and it is too much tiring than I thought. I know I am missing my favourite subject :(

Many apologies - I'm coming down with man flu so I'll have to ponder the universe from my lazy sick bed.....

For this discussion, do we have a working definition of the terms "universe" and "infinite"? Are we talking about our universe only or are we talking about a possible multiverse?

See introduction. Otherwise, this is a free flowing discussion where all interpretations and ideas are looked at.

Hi David sorry really wanted to make this but family coming to see us-probably as good a definition of what seems like infinity!

Hi David look forward to discussing the infinity question in infinite detail. Will it ever end? I understand we only have two hours which I believe is a finite amount of time. Mummmm interesting.

Time is an illusion, lunch time doubly so!

Hi David. We sort of started this conversation the other night just before Chin Chins. Would love to come to this but I'm away for that weekend. Hopefully I'll make it to the next one.

How does the expansion of the universe also relate to the existence of time. If we werent expanding, there would be no time. So infinity is part of time?????
