Thanks and please step up with any latent enthusiasm you might have for this group as it wont last forever without people chipping in.

P.S. This was sent out as a group email but as it went to MY spam folder i'm assuming it went to many of yours as well..

    Are you selfless or selfish?

Thought begins when we make real distinctions. Real distinctions divided their domain of application into sets with positive measure. Every universal statement risks failing to make a real distinction by putting everything in its domain on one side of its imagined line of division, with the other side empty. Those thoughts cannot convey actual content; at best they suggest some salient characteristic of reality as a highlight, implicitly contrasted with a different opinion, but failing to make explicit an actual claim. In the present context, if every act is selfish then selfish fails to divide acts, it merely repeats "act", it has been emptied of determinant content and rendered meaningless. All the real differences between the life of St Francis and Jeffery Dalmer remain, you merely make one word useless for understanding the contrast between them.

I went undercover in some puppy mills, which was not only dangerous (especially the one that was using a giant photo of me as a shooting target) but selfless--I got no joy out of it, but most people can't pull that off. I was named statewide Volunteer of the Year for my countless hours at the public hospital, a neighborhood health clinic, and a juvenile detention center. I hated every minute of those things but no one else could & would do what I did. Are our soldiers in Iraq & Afghanistan or other battles selfish, often giving their lives for their fellow soldiers? Are those who break their own hearts volunteering until they drop in animal shelters because there are more needy animals than volunteers selfish?

I like this idea, though I'm pretty new too.

I also would like the topic of epistemology and maybe Buddhist philosophy. Did I miss the discussion about whether Socrates erred in drinking the hemlock?

I would like to discuss the being of being a being. The very existence of a thing, does it qualify as a being? What makes a being a being? How does one become a being? Of course, as to much as possible, without tapping into the physiological, psychological and spiritual aspect of such matter....

I think maybe each of us sharing a quote and discussing what it means to you, then after the other members can share their own perspective about it. Like a sort of critique. Even presenting an original quote, something you wrote, would be neat too.

Not sure about this Friday. What's the location? My house at I-17 and 101 is currently available Sunday evenings and should be available Friday evenings sometime iin July.

What does the word, idea, energy, and concept of CHAOS/KHAOS mean to everyone, and how many actually equate it with evil? A fundamentally irrational thought to have in regards to a force not truly nor entirely understood by most.

I like epistemology as a topic.

I'd add basic ontology, what sorts of things exist? What different senses does "exist" have, and how does that change the answer to the previous? (Does "2" exist? In what sense?)

Modality - is there real possibility, actual non-determinism, vs understanding possibility as reflecting limited knowledge?

Individuals - are there perfect copies? Individuals as instances of universals.

Idealism questions - are the basic constituents of the universe / of reality, thought-like or not? What is the origin of thought-like-ness? Is there a "recipe" for creating thought-like things out of things that do not think?

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
