Just a quick note to let you know that the minutes to the first PLG Food Coop meeting are now online! Thanks again to all who came. For those of you who couldn't make it, the minutes are a good way to catch up and get some ideas of where we are headed.
In summary, 15 people showed up to the first meeting. We talked about what a food coop is in general, realizing that the more specific definition would come out of the communities' needs. We presented the International Cooperative Alliance's standards by which coops should operate--generally in the best interests of a community and care for one another. We went through how a food coop is formed and talked about planning and time (1-2 years). We also brainstormed we would personally like to see in food coop in order to start that needs list, what food issues were in the community, and how we would go about forming a larger community of people talking about food issues and a food coop. A great idea came out of the group to approach established community groups (e.g. churches, schools, etc.) in order to start the conversation about food coops and get more people interested in the idea.

I am thinking that the next meeting will take place toward the end of September. I may be sending out a poll to those of you who didn't attend the meeting to get some feedback on times/days you are available to attend.
Finally, please forward this Meetup Group to anyone you think who might be interested in a Food Coop in the PLG area (PLG, Crown Heights, Flatbush, Ditmas, Kensington, etc.)! The more people who sign up and follow our activities, the more potential members we will have!
Feel free to email me or call me if you have any questions or feedback. I can be reached at karen at houseofcakes dot com or [masked].
Thanks again for a great start!
