Life in the circus is inherently cruel for animals, who suffer from constant travel, abusive training, and social isolation. In the circus, virtually all of animal’s natural behaviors are thwarted.
The Piccadilly Circus most recently was traveling with three elephants owned by George Hanneford III. If you live in South Florida, that name may be familiar. For many years, the three Asian elephants-- "Carol" "Liz" and "Patty"-- were forced to perform circus tricks up to three times per day, seven days a week at Fort Lauderdale's Swap Shop flea market. The circus was evicted in 2005, but sadly life did not improve for the elephants as Hanneford began to travel the country with many different circuses.
In February 2011, the USDA inspected George Hanneford's elephants during a Shrine circus in New Mexico. Liz was found to be dangerously underweight. Although Liz is not performing, she is still traveling with the circus inside a truck.
Carol, one of Hanneford's other elephants, crushed a circus worker to death at the Swap Shop in 1990.
