Urban Session - Dowtown Columbia - Learn On-location Lighting and Composition

Come join us for this fun 2 hour photography event in the downtown area of Columbia, SC

I several models arranged for this so there will be plenty of subjects to work and practice with, and capture amazing portfolio images.

I will be teaching composition when working with a portrait subject, using urban structures, and proper lighting techniques.  We will be mostly  working with natural light. However, if you like adding strobes to your session and wish to bring them along, you are always welcome to do so.

This event is good for the beginner to the advanced photographer.  If you are very new and wish for some instruction, I will be teaching with one model at a time, to those of you who request this. For the more advanced members who join us, you may photograph and capture images of the other models as you like.

You will learn:

  • how to scout for good locations for urban sessions
  • which textures work well for backgrounds, and how to use them in your overall composition
  • how to find great available light - I will have reflectors with me and demonstrate how to use them
  • posing and client interaction techniques
  • and some basic camera and photography skills, like metering, focus, and white balance

No experience is necessary to come to this event. You just need a camera and your lens. I would recommend something in the 50mm to 125mm range, fixed or zoom. However, you can use whatever you have and I can explain the limitations and benefits of each in order to capture beautiful images.

I primarily work in all manual mode but it's OK if you usually keep your camera in one of the automatic modes. I will help you with your settings. We usually have a mix of beginners to more advanced professional photographers amongst us and everyone is always willing to help and share with one another!

*Please note: You are REQUIRED to upload your images to this website within 2 weeks of an event.  The models are allowed to ask you for 1 to 2 full resolution images for them to print from and the rest you may share digitally if like, and leave your watermark on. This is the exchange for the models time and for the model release that allows you to use them within your websites and portfolios. However, the release is not signed for you to sell them to 3rd party sites. If you sell to stock photography sites, you will need to bring your own release and ask the model before shooting if he/ she is willing to allow you to do so.

I am really excited about this event. This area has some great locations to shoot in.

I'll look forward to seeing you there....

Lori Jill

I'm a newbie here. Like to learn to use natural lighting without post processing.

I'm glad to teach you posing, seeing the light, composition. Not sure in today's photography world though that you won't still see a difference in images that have been post processed. I believe in capturing it correctly first in camera and using software to enhance or create or vision with.

Thank you Lori...Finally I learnt something very useful in this session. You're right. I did had to enhance my visions digitally.

Fun, and I enjoyed exploring a type of photography I have avoided like the plague. I actually enjoyed it.

Please comment here if you have read that this is rescheduled. I am getting a ton of emails today asking me if it's on. Wondering if you are not getting the email updates from y Meetup now? This is the only way I have to communicate to the members, through a comment here or through the email function.

Hi Lori! I hope to attend this tomorrow if I can. Can I pay you cash on-site? Also, my beau will be with me sans-camera. Is that going to be a problem for him to sit on the "side-lines" and watch?

    April 6, 2013

    • Lori J.

Both questions are good by me Tara. See you there.

I am going to try to clear some room on my calendar for this event. I hope to make it and am looking forward to it! Since leaving TV news, most of what I shoot requires no interaction, so I am hoping to get some tips and pointers in that regard.

I just found out about this group! I'm very interested in urban photography, though I haven't had many chances to work with models in this setting. I should be able to make this and look forward to it.

Do we need to bring our own model release form or will there be a generic one there for us?

    March 25, 2013

    • Lori J.

Awesome Parker, Glad you found us. You will surely enjoy and learn a bunch in our meetings, well that's my goal anyway. I have the model release that is signed for the group, however, it is not one that allows for third party reselling of the models images. If you wish for that, you will need to bring it yourself and ask the model for her permission first. My release allows for portfolio building, on and off line and marketing pieces. Hope to see you there!

Has the event been rescheduled for April 7th?

    March 24, 2013

    • Lori J.

Yes, Teri... I just wrote you an email that asked if you saw the reschedule date, because it's raining today?

      March 24, 2013

  • George P.

May or may not be there the 7th. My weekend to work. Hopefully, I'll make it for at least a little while.

I was really looking forward to attending this session, but I suffered a injury that will make it impossible. I wish the group well, and will hopefully see you soon.

    March 24, 2013

    • Lori J.

I hope that you're ok Jesse. I am actually moving it to the rain date so I hope that you will be better by then to attend.
