Natural Light Mini Workshop - Posing and On-location Composition w/Models

  • April 23 · 6:00 PM

Come join us for this fun 2 hour photography event in the beautiful Hampton Park location of downtown Charleston.

I have arranged a couple models for this and dress styles that you will love!

The Azelea bushes, trees and lush green areas will make amazing backdrops for your images at this time of day.

Below are a few images from attendees as previous events similar to this one:

And a couple of mine:

The park is very large but has ample parking on a Sunday (from what I have been able to tell).  We will meet at the water in the center of the park by the little arched bridge. The 1st 15 minutes will be for introductions and gathering and we will begin shooting at 6:15pm. If you are running later than that you may have some trouble locating us.

You will learn:

1st - composition when working with a congested public park area such as this.

2nd - I will explain/ show how I create variety in what seems like a limited location with minimum effort and minimum props.

3rd - how to look for the right light to compliment the background, and then pose and add light to our subject accordingly.

This workshop is for the beginner to intermediate, but all levels are always welcome to tag along and capture images as they like also.

***The models are always expected to stay within the group confines though.

If you are very new and wish for some instruction, I will be teaching with one model at a time, to those of you who request this.

As much as possible, I will be working with only natural light.  I will have a 5-1 reflectors with me and demonstrate how to use it properly.  I will also give some help with posing, and teach some basic camera skills, like metering, focus, and depth of field choices.

If you like adding strobes to your session and wish to bring them along, you are welcome to do so. I may or may not use some of my own, but if I do, I will be more than happy to explain this to you also.

No experience is necessary to come to this event. You just need a camera and at least one lens, I usually recommend a 50mm or longer (depending on your camera and style of images).

I primarily work in all manual mode but it's OK if you usually keep your camera in one of the automatic modes. I will help you with your settings if you wish to try manual mode. We have a mix of beginners to working professional photographers among us, and everyone is always willing to help each other!

*Please note: You are REQUIRED to upload your images to this website within 2 to 3 weeks of an event.  The models are allowed to ask you for 2 full resolution images for them to print from and the rest you may share digitally if like, and leave your watermark on. This is the exchange for the models time and for the model release that allows you to use them within your websites and portfolios. However, the release is not signed for you to sell them to 3rd party sites. If you sell to stock photography sites, you will need to bring your own release and ask the model before shooting if he/ she is willing to allow you to do so.

Please forward any questions to me at [masked]

Lori Jill

P.S. I always encourage you to check the Meetup site the day of the event, for any changes on the event, before driving to us.

Ok, I am shutting down the RSVP on this event. We have 12 photogs and 2 models right now. I'd like to have 3 for this number but as of now no luck!

I lost a couple models with all the reschedules and have had trouble lining any more up right now. No worries.... I am actively working on more models for all our upcoming fun, but, if anyone has a model they wish to send my way it would be greatly appreciated.
    :-)

So this has moved to the 23rd ?

    April 16

    • Lori J.

Hey Chris i wrote last night and then I wrote you an individual email also today. I am sorry if you are not getting them. I am finding some people have their email preference turned off or if they are using gmail they don't realize it gets filtered, idk...

    See you the 23rd!

Got it. Perfect frog making weather. Welcome to Charleston the home of checkerboard weather!

    • Lori J.

You know me Zan - I will tolerate most of it and I don't even mind the rain, as long as it is warm. My trigger finger relies on being able to feel! LOL Actually this was for the sake of the girls, I felt so badly for them on the beach in this same weather last week, ya know?

I always worry when I have to change details on an event that the people who RSVP'd may possibly not see it. If you do, could you please like this comment or simply respond under it so I know you have received the notifications. Thank you... and see you soon!

Lori, maybe their email is marking it as SPAM and putting it in their Junk email folder. If they mark emails from PPG as "safe" or "not" junk they will go to their Inbox. Do you have any other way to get a message out to anyone to let them know to check that? Just a thought.....

  • Larry S.

So was I wrong in thinking that it was rescheduled for today the 16th? Now it's the 23?

    April 16

    • Lori J.

Hey Larry. I wrote out an email last night explaining it. It was a second reschedule. Have you felt the weather out there today? The girls are suppose to be in summer dresses - not happening today! I am concerned though that people are still not getting their Meetup emails. I wonder why? Only a couple of you have responded here.

      April 16

    • Larry S.

Yup been feeling it since 2am. I've shot in worse conditions but them again I was wearing a jacket. I actually saw the email after I responded here. So I'm getting them.

      April 16

  • Hope F.

Got it Lori! I will see you on the 23rd.

  • Jeff D.

Was hoping to make it, but Wednesdays are off limits for me until sometime in May - daughter has gymnastics and we only have 1 car. I hope to catch the next one and also still hoping to make the meet and greet, but if i can it will be a little later due to previous commitments for this week.
