Grand Canyon trip-Veteran's Day weekend

Although the main activity is the long hike (~16miles), you will not be expected to do the long hike if you are not fully conditioned for this distance.  There are many other hikes, shorter distance, you can enjoy while in the Grand Canyon area.  If you haven't been to the area, I highly encourage you to see the beauty nature has to offer.  It's a breath taking experience.

As for the long hike, I always love it because of the breath taking views and the great workout. It's tough to take on in one day. I've taken marathoners on this hike and they found it challenging especially on the way back up Bright Angel trail.  But with proper training, you can do it!

THIS WILL BE A DAY HIKE!!!!

We will begin from South Kaibab trail taking the earliest shuttle from Grand Canyon Village.  Once at the trail head, it is about ~6.5 miles down to the Colorado river, with consistent amazing views the entire way down. As there is little shade and no water stations, it is better to hike down the South Kaibab trail early morning, and up the Bright Angel trail (~9.5 miles) during the later part of the day, where there is more shade and more water stops.

Distance: ~16.0 miles round-trip.

Total Elevation change: 4,740ft descent, 4360ft ascent

We'll stop at Phantom Ranch for lunch, relax and refill our water before heading up Bright Angel trail.

Everyone signing up will need to indicate their recent hiking activities before being allowed on the Attendee list.  So at first, you will be Wait listed, then moved onto the Attendee list after your hiking background is reviewed. Considering this is a STRENUOUS hike, Advance-Intermediate to Advance hikers will only be allowed on the Attendee list.  This is for your safety and the others around you.  Please respect this request.

The Grand Canyon: Kaibab to Bright Angel Trail

Accommodations: 406 Canyon Plaza Lane, P.O. Box 520, Grand Canyon, AZ[masked], Phone: (928)[masked] • Fax: (928)[masked], Information: [masked] • General Manager: [masked], www.grandcanyonplaza.com.

We will meet at a location TBA to begin our carpool.  I'm hoping we can find a safe place to park our cars here in the Inland Empire while we carpool to the Grand Canyon.  If one of you going is okay with us parking our cars at your place, this would be greatly appreciated.

Departure to the GC will be November 9th around 7a..  This will be an estimated seven hour road trip.  So we should get there around check-in time.  As always, if we are carpooling, it's understood we will contribute to the fuel cost.

Overall, if you have any questions, shoot me an email.

Simply put, it was a blast! Thanks guys for making this trip a lot of fun. Oh yeah, great work out too! I feel even more prepared for C2C this Saturday. In any case, thanks again for coming out and experiencing the beauty we have been blessed with. Like Jairo has said, not everyone can take time to come out and enjoy something like this. With that said, I feel privileged to have participated in this activity. Also, happy to see GC area businesses picking up from the government shutdown and our group, along with many others, contributing their economy. May that area, along with others effected, continue to recover.

Just to be clear, the cooler is to keep my food chilled over night before the hike. I don't plan to bring the cooler on the hike. So no request for me to haul anyone's food down the hill.....LOL !

The Grand Canyon NP website states that lunches must be reserved in advance for Phantom Ranch. If this is what the group is doing please let me know and I will reserve a lunch.

    November 3, 2013

    • Joe

Hey Jordan, count me in for lunch too.

      November 4, 2013

    • Jordan K.

You can reserve a lunch by credit card at phantom ranch by this number 8882972757. It is a sack lunch around $10. You pick it up at a window at anytime. I am still undecided if I will do it or not. Considering it is all downhill to Phantom Ranch it is not that bad to carry my own lunch.

Transportation: The plan is to leave from Joe's place in Colton at 7a.. He has space to park our cars. Also, looks like we may need two cars for five people. Jordan and Rebecca will meet us the day of the hike at GC. Joe, if you can email everyone your address, it would be great! At this point, I'm willing to drive my vehicle and have space for four people. So when we get to Joe's Saturday morning, let's say 6:30a, we'll figure out the second driver (or sometime before, here in the comment section). Also, our destination address is, 406 Canyon Plaza Lane, P.O. Box 520, Grand Canyon, AZ[masked], so take note of this.

Hi Robert, Jordan and I will be camping in the Grand Canyon campground that weekend and would like to meet up for the hike. It looks like you will be meeting at the visitor's center bus stop - are you planning on taking the 5:00am shuttle? We just want to know what time we need to be there. Thanks!

Hi Gina, that would be me. Go ahead RVSP, Robert has a few question for you.

      October 17, 2013

  • robert w.

Ok I am good with that if I slow down on way up
Press on you know me I will get there. Rolled at 2 miles
Per hour with 30 lb backpack most of the
Summer will be ok. Just did not want slow
Group down if going fast then I would go on my
Own staying fairly close or ahead not to
    Hinder the group.

  • robert w.

Thank you so we all have a room each. Perfect
Me I like my owe space. Too use to
Traveling alone and too old to change.
