Tahquitz Peak

Tahquitz Peak Lookout at its elevation of 8,828 feet is the highest lookout in the San Bernardino National Forest. It is also the forest’s longest continuously operated station, serving some 77 years, and is the only lookout located inside a Wilderness area.
Tahquitz Peak is located along the Desert Divide in the San Jacinto Mountains of Southern California. From the summit of this alpine beauty, views abound. To the north, Marion Mtn is seen across Tahquitz Valley. Palm Springs can be seen to the east along with the Santa Rosa mountains. Looking south on a clear day in the afternoon, you can see the Mt Palomar telescope dome glittering in the sunlight. Westerly vistas are of the Inland Empire, as well as San Gabriels.
The origin of Tahquitz's name is derived from the Cahuilla god Tahquish who believe the peak to be the god's home.

I'm cancelling because of the heat. As the forecast went up today, my sense of caution finally overcame my stubborn streak! Take care everyone. Chris, thanks for offering the ride, sorry to cancel after all.

Be sure to bring enough water to carry you through the hike and the heat. It will be nice and cool at the start and warm as we make our way back. Fortunately, it will be downhill on the way back. Also, we'll judge how long the stay at the top will be based on the heat. Moreover, this is a short distance hike just beyond our weekday training hikes up Morten peak and well under our long distance hikes (San Jacinto, San G, Baldy, Bridge to Nowhere, etc...).

Hi. Is this hike about 4 hours total?

      A former member

Jennifer, it could be four hours, it could be five. It depends on the level of the group, the weather, how long the break stops will be, etc.. if you think the group may hold you up, you can pick up a permit from the ranger station the morning of the hike.
