Full Moon Hike and mini Potluck- Hulda Crooks Park

what: Fullmoon hike and mini Potluck at the turnaround (~3mile point).  This will be a different route from the usual.  It will also be a bit more challenging because of the extended distance and 3 additional hills added to the hike.  The hill leading up to the turnaround is the steepest of all the trails I've hiked at Hulda Crooks Park.  But don't worry, it's a short climb at this point.  If you've been doing our weekday Blue Mountain hikes, pushing yourself, you'll be fine.

Plan to be at the turnaround for at least a half hour where we'll share in all the food and drinks under a well lit Fullmoon sky.  Please go to the comment section below to indicate what food item you like to bring. I'm thinking finger foods, chips, salsa, a little wine, etc... This will not be a BBQ.  So don't bring the steaks....LOL!

where: Hulda Crooks Park, 11800 Mountain View Ave, Loma Linda, Ca

when: Sunday, November 17th, 4:45p.m.. Sunset will be 4:57p and the moon is scheduled to rise at 5:18p. providing us a well lit area by the time we get to the picnic area.

difficulty: semi strenuous - please know your limits

distance: ~5.5 miles

time: ~3-hours

what: Look for me at the far left parking lot as you drive into the park at Mountain View and Beaumont Avenue. I will be driving the Silver Hyundai Elantra. If you need to call me or txt, my number is,[masked]-7132.

what to bring: plenty of water[masked] oz bottles, something to snack on, your food item for the potluck, running shoes or hiking boots, comfortable/warm clothing, flash light or headlamp.

As I climbed the STEEPEST hill I was thinking, "This is NO picnic..." But it was. And I thought the coyote concert was beautiful and special.

I had a good question, Do we carry our food in our backpacks or are we eating back at the parking lot? We do carry our food in our packs and enjoy the meal at the turnaround ~3mi into the hike.

Hey guys, I just bought a Garnin Gpsmap 62s. I plan to use it during the hike tomorrow. If you are familiar with gps devices, I can use your help tomorrow figuring it out. Also, if you're interested in purchasing a Garmin 62s, they have a great deal at Rei now until November 24th. Regular priced, $350.00, marked down to, $199.00. The device's reviews are great too. Check it out! If you get one, we may talk about organizing an, Amazing Race, or find, Waldo, game (Geocache):-).

Hi Vanessa, the sky is expected to be clear for the hike Sunday evening. Though the write-up has the fullmoon being the highlight for the evening, however, it seems to me the company and the sharing of food being the take-away. Also, don't think this is a drunken bunch of people. We actually share in very light drinking. One other thing for the evening, be sure to bring a headlamp or flashlight, something warm to wear, and of course, your good food =). If you have any other questions, let us know.

    2 · November 15, 2013

    • Lori B.

Hi Vanessa. Hummus and pita is great! Normally you will have to bring plates and whatever to go with. Unless someone else volunteers . . Z

I was thinking that I should bring something I would like to eat in case I get lost or nobody else shows up. Answer: DESERT. Something called apple slices.

    November 15, 2013

    • Lori B.

I thought you would bring cookies!

      November 15, 2013

    • Tom K.

Good guess; but these are sort of cookies but with apple slices in them. Spelling is hard for me: dessert in the desert.

Kara, I cannot predict for sure if it will take 3 hours. Sometimes it has taken 3.5 hours and other times four hours. It depends on how much fun the group is having, what time we actually start the hike, how many times we regroup for slower hikers or those who have taken a wrong turn, etc... Moreover, this has always been a relaxing activity for our members, enjoying each others company with food and spirits. If you will be pressed for time, please look at another date to do the full moon hike. We do this hike every month. So you'll get another chance.

    1. It says the hike should be done in 3 hours. What are the chances that it could go longer? 2. How far is it from the freeway?

I want to go to this so bad! I have to pick my kids up at 7, though :( I'll try to see if I can get them later.
