A moderately strenuous Idyllwild hike for experienced hikers: a 10.5 mile loop with 3150 ft elevation gain.
From Humber Park we will head to the Ernie Maxwell trail head.
We will go down the Ernie Maxwell trail to South Ridge trail that climbs about 2400 ft for 4 miles through chaparral, oaks and pines to a Forest Service lookout tower at Tahquitz Peak (8846 ft). This is the toughest climb on our journey but you will be pleasantly distracted by panoramic views to the south and west - one of the best views trails in the area.
From the peak, we will make our way through the lush Tahquitz Valley to Saddle Junction (1.4 mi), then down Devil's Slide (2.5 mi.) to Humber Park
IMPORTANT: An Adventure Pass will be required to park in Humber Park, available at most sporting goods stores and ranger station.
Bring snacks, lunch and 2 to 4 liters of water
Approx. hike time, including breaks: 6 hours
