San Bernardino Peak

This activity is a training hike leading up to Nine-Peak Challenge and Cactus to Clouds. You do not have to participate in either activity to sign up for this hike.

Warning: Please be in hiking shape for this activity. If you cannot handle major elevation gains in a short distance and altitude, please do not RSVP for this activity. This is considered a strenuous hike.

As written by Summitpost.com:

This trail takes you from deep pine forest to exposed manzanita slopes and visits the old Washington Monument survey point at 10,290 feet. In 1852, Colonel Henry Washington and his Army survey party were directed to erect a monument atop San Bernardino Peak. The monument was to be an east-west reference point from which all future surveys of Southern California would be taken.

The higher slopes of San Bernardino Peak are beautiful and rugged subalpine terrain. A number of trail camps along the way offer spring water and rest. The Angelus Oaks "San Bernardino Peak" trailhead is less visited than others at the edge of the San Gorgonio Wilderness, but still it receives a lot of use especially during summer weekends.

Distance: 16 miles

Elevation gain: ~4700 feet

What to bring: at least 3 liters of water, lunch, snacks, layers of clothing, sunscreen, camera, hiking poles if you use them.

Meeting point: Meet at the Millcreek Ranger Station at 11a. and follow drivers up to the trail head.  If you know where the trail head is located, meet there.

You can also refer to the following link regarding the 10 essentials to have when hiking:

Also, what you bring from this list of essentials will depend on the individual's preferences, knowledge, experience, climate and locations may/will require substitutions.

An almost perfect hike. Perfect weather, all types of flora and terrain, beautiful views, physically challenging , and many friends. "Almost" due to less than perfect balance and a skidding collision with a small piece of San B (rock). Thanks Robert (planning and herding) and Julie (pace) for so much fun.

Gorgeous day for a hike! I was blown away by the view of the vast valley below standing atop of the stone bench half mile from the peak. The folks that came out were awesome to hike with also. I had a good time hiking with all of you. Thanks to all of you for making the day a lot of fun! I look forward to hiking with you in the future :-).

Weirdness! I thought I saw a post by Lori about doing this hike with P and K. Another thread? Or Alzheimers already?
