Capitol Forest

Going to do a Capitol Forest ride on 9/7. We will meet at the Middle Waddell parking lot located at 11085 Waddell Creek Road Southwest, Olympia, WA. The parking lot is just south of the Waddell Creek campground.  You will need a discovery pass to park.  I'll be in the silver Tacoma with a KTM.  I'll be there at 9am and plan on hitting the trails by 9:30am.

We will probably do about a 20-25 mile loop. Mostly intermediate trails with some roots, ruts and rocks. Can be a little slippery if it rains.  The primary loop I was thinking about going is the Waddell Basin loop.  Here is a link to the DNR website where you can get a map of the trail system at Capitol Forest.  Hope to see you there.

PS, thinking outloud, but anyone down for a camping/riding trip to Straddleline Park anytime soon? No rules, ride when you want, how you want, bring who you want, (I'm bringing Nicole Kidman), and have fun. Thoughts?

I think this is a good idea, but I think you guys do this now by describing what you are thinking. Group rides will always be a compromise because rarely is everyone on the same page as far as skill, mood, intent, etc., but you know that going in. I ride track mostly, so generally you are alone, but I like a group ride too just to hang out, its safer, (case you hear banjos), and its fun because it is different. Long story boring, that's what a group ride is, and makes it a different dynamic. As long as everyone going is as close as possible to the same page as far as what will transpire.

I have been thinking about a conversation we had on breaks. The bicycle meetups I am on has rides classified by skill. I fit on a faster pace for th m/c, but some may be challenged. What if some are put off with folks that want to keep riding, while some might be put off by constant stopping every few miles. Maybe we should classify the ride, or offer two speeds.

Great ride, and we got lucky with the weather. Greg was a good trail leader, lending his knowledge of the trails. It got ugly slippery, early. John went down and broke a radiator, ending his ride. But good tight, technical trails.

Supposed to rain like crazy Thursday, possibly Friday. Partly Cloudy Saturday. But, like all Western Washington Rides, be prepared. I am sure there will be puddles.

I am in. I can't get parts for the Maico in time for the AHRMA Spokane race this weekend. So, I am in. Old, Red GMC crew cab with a 16ft. trailer. Might bring a friend who is an old hat at this.

Speaking of tabs, do we need to have tabs, or anything, to ride in the woods?

Hey what type of tab do you need to ride cap forest? I have discovery pass for parking that's it.

      September 3, 2013

    • Greg

Capitol Forest only requires the Discovery Pass to park. Your bike needs a plate or offroad tabs I believe.

If I can get a ride by then, I might try it. (my truck was stolen yesterday can you believe it...but thank the dirt gods, they didn't get my bike...) I ride/race mostly MX tracks, (no roots), and have been riding for decades, but not highly proficient on trails so I'll be taking notes. If I can't handle it, you guys go on without me and I'll just go back to the parking area and look for a new truck...

Thanks for the reply Greg. Wish I could make it but my wife just reminded me my daughter has her first soccer game on the 7th... I am in Tacoma and hope to hook up for one of these rides soon.

Should be a moderate pace. The riders can workout the natural pecking order. We'll have plenty of breaks so everyone can catch up and stay together.

    August 27, 2013

  • Tige E.

I am hoping to make this one, but won't rsvp until I know for sure. What kind of pace?

    August 27, 2013

I would like to join you but I have to work until 2am and won't be home until 3am, maybe next time.
