Lower Salt Paddle from Stewart Mtn Dam to Granite Reef

  • Shell Gas Station

Power Rd and McDowell Rd, Mesa, AZ (map)

    33.466282 -111.684036

  • Important Consideration: Water level lower then normal at this time of year, so we will have to wait and see. If the water is too slow, then we can go upriver instead, at least see how far we can get to Phon D...

We will be paddling the section from Saguaro Lake Ranch to Granite Reef. Saguaro Lake Ranch gives us a launch at the beautiful canyon walled section that most people do not see, with an estimated float time of 3 hours, try to be off the water at 10:30 before it is too hot. We have a special $5 rate for Paddle Arizona by the owners of the ranch; $5 dollars per person, no extra parking rate. Tonto Pass is $6 per car if you leave your car at Granite Reef to help with the shuttle. Folks parked at the Ranch should give a few dollars to the drivers of the shuttle parked at Granite Reef to cover the Tonto Pass fee.

We will first meet at the Shell gas station at 6:30 to organize the shuttle, and minimize the number of vehicles we will need to use. Tonto passes are available there. We will decide at this time who will be parking at the Saguaro Lake Ranch, and who will be parking at Granite Reef. We can share the costs of the Tonto passes. Please bring the $5 case for the Saguaro Lake Ranch launch. We will likely launch boats by 7:15, so if you are late you can meet us at the ranch, or even put in at Water Users park a bit later for a shorter trip.

Tonto Pass is $6 per car if you leave your car at Granite Reef.

And please refer to our safety rules.

Float time is going to be around 4 hours so plenty of water and munchies and sun protection.

We will either go to Famous Daves at Riverview Mall (Dobson & 202) or Red, White, and Brew on Power and McDowell for lunch.

Morey or Dave I don't think they allow trailer parking at Granite Reef and I don't think they allow parking on the road side, is there someplace close I can park the Kayak hauler?

I have parked my jeep and trailer just past the no parking signs, you walk a 75 yards back to Granite Reef

Mory, I will likely do Watson Lake this Saturday and put it in as an event this evening. Are you interested in doing an upriver run from Granite Reef? Then you can take over as host for those who like making like the Salmon (upriver you little fishees).

Thanks for the offer but I would rather not. What time are you planning to do Watson Lake?

The Salt River is at this posting flowing at 105 cfs got to have 500 cfs or better to make it worth your while.
The Verde River joins the Lower Salt River at Phon D. which is adding as of this posting 495 cfs. now with the total of 600cfs now we are talking about something worth paddling.

A few weeks ago at Squaw Lake camp out we paddled up the mighty Colorado River for close to 3/4 of a mile, we did this by working the river.

Learning to paddle up river is a skill worth learning.

say you are out with a few friends and some one behind you ? how do you get back to them, when walking is not an option?

you paddle back up the river....

I'm just saying it's not that hard, kind of like a water tread mill.

SaltRiver Tubing has delayed their opening till May 18th . Looks like this will probably be an upstream paddle.

Please help me understand. Why does water flow/level make a difference between paddling downstream versus upstream? I just don't get it. The water level is the same. Thanks

The bottom end of the Lower Salt River is really a small lake formed by Granite Reef Dam. You can paddle upriver a mile or two even if the rest of the river is not running enough to float a kayak.

Looks like water levels will not increase until mid May, but just a guess based on SRP water operations, so freeing up a space for others

To avoid adding to the crush of cars at Granite Reef, we're willing get out at Phon D.

How do I know if I can get off the wait list and go? Also, i want to bring a double kayak and my friend cuz she is not sure she can paddle on her own the whole way so will that one kayak count as one attendee? Thanks

I learned a couple of years ago that a Golden Age/America The Beautiful Pass/ is good for parking along the Lower Salt area. I learned this from the ranger that sold me "the Tonto Upgrade Sticker for Interagency Passes" $15. It works with my Golden Age Pass. I then confirmed that the Golden Age Pass was enough for parking with a couple of rangers that were monitoring passes at Phon D.

IT'S MY BIRTHDAY SAT MAY 04 - FOR REAL!

I got a new girl I like to agree to come along. Won't you grant a group member a birthday wish?

Will have one car, 2 paddlers and 2 boats.

I am wondering if this might be too much or too long for my arm. Do we expect white water? I don't want to take a (someone like Cedric's) spot if I can't do it

Longer kayaks are dandy when the water is really flowin, but when its less than a 1,000 CFS shorter boats rule the water, gotta be a little more nimble and quicker movement required.

Randy, this will be a grand time to break out your smaller craft.
