3rd Annual Lake Pleasant Paddle and Watch Fireworks

  • Jul 3, 2013 · 7:00 PM

Our yearly watch the fireworks at Lake Pleasant from your kayak!

We will stay close to shore to avoid the power boats and mayhem. For the purposes of safety, this year we will be implementing a scuba diver's like pairing up protocol, so no one is out there in the dark by yourself. Every year we have had boaters tip over at some point.

This event is not open to first time boaters. Come on one of our other floats prior to coming to this event.

We usually go out to a late night club for drinks and snack after the fireworks.

We will get in the water around 7:30, float around, eat snacks, chat. Lake Pleasant area events to start earlier, food trucks, music, stuff for kids, where some may get there earlier, walk around.

This event is not yet posted on the Pleasant Harbor website, but they confirmed with me on the phone today that the event is happening. Check later for their description.

http://www.pleasantharbor.com/

Parking Fee last year was $10.00

If you plan on joining us, we will be following very strict guidelines for safety purposes, refer to club rules/guidelines, especially

1. life vest on

2. lights in the boat, bring headlamp as well if you have one to be extra visible

3. no one leaves the group to float alone, if you have to return to shore go with someone and let others know.

4. This year we will implement a scuba like safety protocol, members will pair up so no one ends up being left alone in the dark.

5. given the potential for run ins with motorboats, please follow our no alcohol rule (the drinking is for afterwards)

There is no fee to Paddle Arizona to participate in this event, only the $10 parking fee that goes to Pleasant Harbor.

Disclaimer & Assumption of Risk/Liability: Paddling, like all sports have inherent risks and dangers. All paddlers (on behalf of him/her self and his/her minor children) are responsible for their own safety during Paddle Arizona floats, voluntarily accepts any and all risks of injury, harm, medical conditions, or property damage, assumes all liabilities, and waives any and all damages against Paddle Arizona (including its organizers, hosts, and members).

super clear directions

If you get there at 5 to hang out, there maybe parking in this area, but it will fill up fast. There is a shuttle if you don't want to walk from your car! There is a rest room by Spring Canyon Landing.

Before you park, drive your boat to Spring Canyon Landing by 6:15, 7:00 at the latest. We will have a safety talk prior to launch at 7:15 P.M. Spring Canyon Landing is closed to traffic (from those not already down there) from 8 to 9:30, should not effect our group.

The lake was a little chaotic at first and you definitely needed to be watchful since the bigger boats weren't looking out for us - we ultimately tied a rope around a buoy which kept our boats in one spot. We had an amazing view right under the fireworks. That was certainly a lifetime memory. Thanks for arranging another fun time on the water!

I have always wanted to go on a full moon paddle. do you know if I need proper/legal lighting on my kayak for Lake Pleasant?

    July 3, 2013

    • Tim W.

I'm installing a regular 40" light weight aluminum 360 stern light, replacing the in candles went bulb with a LED white bulb and using a 9 volt battery, which should last 5+ hours. We will see how it works tonight. I'm putting extra LED lights on too. More light the better.

I'm coming from East Mesa and have a long bed pick up if anybody wants to carpool and share fuel expenses, Can take 2 more boats. I will bring my family radio for communication if anybody else will have one. Lastly, I saw the near miss at Saguaro Lake so I'm working on a better and brighter 360 white light. Stay close in to shore!

I am going to make a fool of myself and ask some dumb questions! What is a white light? Secondly is my inflatable kayak okay to use or does it have to be hard body? And lastly but not least; how far are you all planning to kayak..2 miles..5miles? I never measured how far I kayaked before!

    July 2, 2013

    • JRiv

We are only kayaking ~ 1 mile. Head out into the bay for a good view of the fireworks. Last year most of us pulled onto a gravel bar, that power boaters stayed away from. An inflatable is a good stable viewing platform and comfortable, just not as fast on flatwater, but this is a short paddle and watch fireworks. Like Dee said, a white flashlight or 360 area light is recommended so boats under way (power boaters in particular) can see you.

chemical glow sticks in green, red or yellow show up well, but don't emit as bright of a light in candlepower or lumens to be seen.

      July 2, 2013

  • Vickie

Is anyone interested in carpooling from central Phoenix. I have a truck and room for 4 kayaks.

How about SUPs paddling with the Kayaks. Lots of TOW- (time on water). Night time paddling experience too.

    June 28, 2013

    • JRiv

Just a bright white light needed per Coast Guard reg's to be a legal nonmotorized watercraft at night, but while paddling among close power boats, more is better. Last year there was alot of drunk power boaters driving around

sup's on our moonlight float had a very serious near miss, and the paddler was well lit. I recommend paying special care to stay close to shore!

Back again got the 5th off, but now I'm looking and it says the 3rd. So fireworks on the 3rd instead of the 4th. I wouldn't mind camping out there but wonder if anyone else will be camping as well. Haven't decided on that yet.

Can I carpool with someone? Also, are beginner paddlers welcome?

    June 1, 2013

    • Dave

No first time paddlers. From the event description: "This event is not open to first time boaters. Come on one of our other floats prior to coming to this event. "
