Woods Canyon Lake 9/6 to 9/8

  • No location was chosen

  • Campout at the Rim near Willow and Woods Canyon Lake. The eagles at woods canyon, the herons and quietude at Willow, don't miss it.

Kayaking, camping, hiking, fishing, cookouts, and good fellowship.

The lake:52 acres surrounded by Ponderosa pine, Douglass fir and oak. Bald eagles nest here and can be seen snatching fish out of the lake. Bathrooms and water available as well as a small well stocked store at the lake. This is a small and very popular lake. Only electric motors can be used to power boats, leaving no wakes.

    The camping:
There is lots of free camping nearby in the forest. No water - bring your own, No bathrooms- you gotta do what you gotta do. Be responsible campers. One of my favorite places is behind the Rim Visitor Information Center. Free- and you are right alongside the rim, beautiful.  At Woods Canyon there are Outhouse potties.

General directions to our encampment is listed below. A sign will be posted at our site with the name of our group. We may also post more specific directions to our site on a bulletin board to be identified in a later posting. We will make it clear where we will be camping for folks coming individually, earlier or later.

While our main group will be in the dispersed area as described above, some may want to camp in a formal campground, and join us for water and dining events in the dispersed areas. There are pay campsites with water available for a charge, $14 to $18 a night. Aspen Campground has plenty of openings, and you can reserve a site online for $18.

If you just want to come for the day you are of course welcome.

    The Food and Drink:

Bring food for potlucks (dinner, breakfast), lunch.

Bring a Bottle of Wine to share at the Saturday afternoon Happy Hour and Wine Tasting.

    Directions
The drive to the rim is about two hours if we don't stop in Payson or elsewhere. We will take the 87 Beeline Highway to Payson 60 miles, right on 260 East 29.3 miles, at which point 260 has reached the top of the rim. Here is Rim Road to the left, Old Rim Road to the right. If you are directly heading to the lake, take Rim Road to the left 3.3 miles, then turn right to stay on Rim Road for .3 miles, then it turns into Forest Service Road 105, and another .9 miles you have reached the lake.

To get the camp ground, take a right on Old Rim Road away from the lake when 260 has reached the top of the rim. You will see the Rim Visitor Information Center on the right. If you continue down Old Rim Road there are forest, dispersed camping areas, where we will be setting up camp. Look for signs saying Paddle Arizona on the road directing you to our sight.

Float Plan: Friday 2 P.M. Canyon Lake; Saturday 9:30 A.M. Canyon Lake; Sunday 10 A.M. Willow! lakes are small enough, you will find us if you get there late. I will be to the West end, where the eagle's nest, with my camera.

If you need help transporting your boat, let us know. You can communicate through the "talk about this group" section.

Bring food for potlucks (dinner, breakfast), lunch.

You can email our organizers with suggestions, comments, or questions, or call Dave

Woods Canyon Lake says "cancelled". Why was this MeetUp cancelled, was it cos of the "bear sighting" in that area? Cos another camping group was gonna camp there last weekend, but no one signed up cos of the bear sighting, so it was also cancelled. I thought there were enough people signed up, wasn't there? I would have still gone, but I have a model horse show Sat.

If camping at the dispersed area along the old rim road, it's a must that someone arrive on Thursday before dark to reserve space for the group.
That's what myself and Mory did last time we camped there and few sites were left in this area by Thursday evening.

In the description, both Aspen campground, a developed campground near Woods Canyon lake and the dispersed camping area along old rim road are mentioned. Confusing which one we are gathering at.

I just camped/paddled and snorkeled at Willow Springs Lake and picked "King Bolete" mushroom, edible, about 10 inches across. I think there will still be good mushrooming there. Hope so.
