Sedona hike, photography

Update: no camping, just day hike. Rent a cabin if you want to stay there overnight, or drive up before daybreak, like me. Meet you at the trail head at 8 A.M. (when the parking lot opens).

Autumn is in full colors there as we speak.

The Autumn season is upon us, and there are some amazing places in Arizona to view the fall colors.

Saturday hike at West Fork of Oak Creek (three mile rt easy hike).

Parking:

For West Oak Creek, parking lot will be full with a line of cars waiting to get in. Either way, get there as soon as possible. Free parking with a Red Rock Pass not far from entrance by the side of the road. Cost is $5 a day. I've never had a problem parking this way.  You can purchase a red rock pass here
http://www.redrockcountry.org/passes-and-pe...
A year pass can be gotten for $20.I http://www.redrockcountry.org/passes-and-pe...

Due to the campground closures, I plan to go just for day. There are primitive camping options, so use this comment section to make special arrangements (outside our formal event).

Dave! Hey you are coming to Sedona!!! great...
If you need any help with scouting around let me know. The campgrounds may open until then, but it is freezing cold at night, so you know. It will be even colder by the end of the month. This week it's still doable. But, if you are die-hards it is easy...
It will be wonderful to see you and John again. Missed you all.
I will probably come just for the hike. If you need a warm place you can always crash at my little one-bedroom

I wanted to go check out the campgrounds in the Canyon today. I could not pass through Uptown! The traffic was backup all the way into the Canyon. Made it only to the end of town and turned back. If you want to go that way on a weekend, you have to get into the canyon before 11am and leave either very early in the morning, or after 6 pm.

how many can you accommodate for camping? The campground is now full

West Fork Trailhead parking was open Saturday w/many cars still parked on roadside.

Creek side campsites at Cave Springs Campground require reservation, which is worth the effort, IMO.

Breakfast in town at Wildflower Bakery might be worth the drive to some, they have very nice meals, are affordable, a nice fireplace inside the dining area and wifi.

Secret Canyon would be a better hike for pics than Bell Trail, but again, that's JMO. I just hiked Wet Beaver Creek two weeks ago and found significant washout from recent flooding as compared to what I remembered.

I'd like to make this one, we'll have to see!

I suggest Wildflower Bakery on Sunday morning prior to the Secret Canyon hike (or whatever hike we choose), as we need to make hast Saturday to get good parking.

Oct 25 is long enough that the shutdown will be lifted. Another option is dispersed camping outside of sedona on the road to cottonwood. Close to hiking trails of spring creek (dave we went there with you). Also sycamore canyon, shamans cave.

While the telephone number listed says the office is closed, makes no mention of the trail. Here is a report that Thursday West Fork is OPEN. http://www.tripadviso...

      October 12, 2013

    • Dave

confirmed, it is STILL OPEN. From a hiker who went there Friday: West Fork is not closed. Just the parking lot and bathrooms are. The forest service has not barred access to this forest, AFAIK. Just park 300 yards up the road on the right or left. Totally legal. This is not a National Park--very different. National Forests can't be closed to entry except for things like fire danger, AFAIK. Only the concession here in this case, Recreation Resource Management, is not showing up for work. BTW, Thursday I saw many cars parked outside the gate with people going in. No problem except that they could have gotten ticketed where they parked.

I wouldn't be able to leave until Friday after 4:30 at the latest. Would it be possible to drive up there and meet you all and have a nice time camping? I'd love to do this, but have to think of my job first. If anyone is in the same boat as me, maybe we can carpool?

You can arrive any time. there will be signs in the area to find us. We still need to consider an alternative plan B option.
