Blue Ridge Reservoir Long Weekend

The most popular destination for kayakers across Arizona and beyond, Blue Ridge needs no description, but you can visit the website here:

http://www.fs.usda.gov/wps/portal/fsinternet/!ut/p/c5/04_SB8K8xLLM9MSSzPy8xBz9CP0os3gDfxMDT8MwRydLA1cj72BTn0AjAwgAykeaxcN4jhYG_h4eYX5hPgYwefy6w0H24dcPNgEHcDTQ9_PIz03VL8iNMMgycVQEADoWIdk!/dl3/d3/L2dJQSEvU...

We have reservations at the Ernst Pod at Moqui for Thursday 2 P.M. to Sunday 12 P.M. for 50 persons. Please feel free to camp elsewhere if you want some privacy, or stay in your favorite bed and breakfast, so long as you join us for some floating fun and other outdoor's activities while we are there.

Camping at Ernst

Click on this link to visit the Moqui group website, with a description of the area, campsite rules, and directions. When you get close, you will see a sign. A Paddle Arizona sign, that is, lit with a solar light for those who come at night.

http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/coconino/recreation/camping-cabins/recarea/?recid=54930&actid=33

Dining

We usually share food in the morning and the evening, pot luck style... no organizing who brings what and our luck has been good.  We've had great food every time!

Outdoor Fun

Many hiking and photographic opportunities, decisions we can make in the morning prior to the float.

The Arizona Trail is there

The Blue Ridge Segment

Bring instruments, and games (Farkle!)

There is an official horseshoe area, but you'd need to bring the horseshoes. ;-)

Fees

We are asking $20 donation per person. Minors have free pass. Any funds that we gather over the cost of the reservations will be deposited in our non profit Paddle Arizona account. None of our organizers makes any profit from any of our events. Either use PayPal link or pay at Blue Ridge.

Weather Link

DIRECTIONS:

Once you are heading north on 87 you will come to the gas station and restaurant at Clint's Well (Left or West side).  Go approximately 8 miles north (just past mile marker 298) and turn RIGHT at the MOQUI sign.  (Also look for a PADDLE ARIZONA sign there.)  One mile back on the LEFT you will turn into the Ernst GROUP SITE.

NOTE:  Four miles past Clint's Well, you will PASS the turn off for Blue Ridge Reservoir, also on the right.  DO NOT TURN HERE FOR THE GROUP SITE.  This turn is for the boat ramp and Rock Crossing camping only.

FLOATING:

The plan is to MEET AT THE Ernst GROUP SITE AT 8:00 AM SATURDAY to load boats and people into as few trucks, trailers, & cars as possible & be at the launch site by approximately 8:30. There is very limited parking up above the boat ramp and it would be much easier if we brought boats and people over as a group, as much as possible.  We always find a way to make this work! :-)  If you plan to camp at Rock Crossing, feel free to meet us at Ernst at 8:00 am or at the boat ramp at 8:30, if you'd like to paddle with the group.  In any case, we hope to all meet at the Ernst site for our Saturday potluck about 5:30pm.

This campsite is at approximately 7400 feet altitude and the temps could fluctuate.  Bring plenty of layers, rain gear just in case, EZ ups or tarps and poles.  It should be a great trip!!

Fire ban will be in effect, so those with propane firepits will bring...

Haven't verified it yet but we just got word the boat ramp @ Blueridge is closed due to rock slides. I will verify when I make it up there. I am in Pine now

Just called ranger station & they said there is an exposed boulder near the bottom of the ramp due to low water level but that ramp should be open through Monday. Hope you find that to be the case when you arrive, Bob. Pls let us know. Thx!

Mory just checked & fire ban near Blue Ridge has been lifted... WOOHOO!! Bring firewood if you have it! Tarp-age may be necessary, too, if you can bring any. (EZ- ups, tarps, poles, rope, etc.)

    July 8, 2014

    • Mory

I also have 2 Swedish Log candles, for our enjoyment, during our happy hour.

      Sounds amazing! Can't wait!!

      July 10, 2014

I spoke with the ranger today. The left arm has water for us to kayak in. The right arm will be very limited. The weather is in the hands of the unknown, but prepare for rain, thunder, and wind, and know you are far far away from the desert in which we live

    July 9, 2014

    • JRiv

29 % full is better than no water :). Should be interesting exposing rocks, submerged logs, items dropped in the water by people etc. which are usually underwater.

anyone has any questions at all about our arrangements or directions, please call me. [masked]

Does anyone have 2 extra kayaks they would be willing to let me borrow for this trip?

    July 6, 2014

That would be wonderful. Will you bring them or should I come by to pick them up?

      July 9, 2014

I will take on my trailer

      July 9, 2014

I am not sure I'll be able to leave Thursday. If I don't, I will for sure leave Friday early early A.M. Will be there with my tarpage, etc.

    July 9, 2014

  • Mory

Dave, since you will be there before I get there, I am expecting a nice warm toasty fire upon my arrival ;) around dark thirty Fri eve.

    July 9, 2014

    • Carolyn

      I second that request, Dave.

      July 9, 2014

I may not make it until Friday, still trying to get all the handicap modifications done to the RV.
Looking forward to some big trees and campfires.

    July 8, 2014

  • Karen R.

I'm going to have to change my RSVP to No. Sorry, maybe next time.

    July 8, 2014

  • JRiv

Definitely go prepared for rain, heavy at times from early afternoon into the evenings as that's the forecast for the next 8 days around Moqui campground and Blue Ridge Res. and that's what's been happening in the Mogollon rim country for the past week. This past week, when I was up there (Show low and Woods canyon, Bear Canyon area) , the Apache Sitgreaves National forest ranger I talked to mentioned by July 12th they may modify fire restrictions to stage I, so fires may be allowed in developed campgrounds.

I will be bringing my tarp-age to deal with any extra moisture that might try to dampen our afternoons.
Might also recommend good quality rain gear, just in case.

  • CindyLou

I've changed my rsvp to no, I'm camping up there right now, but the weather might run me out. If it doesn't, I'll see you all on the paddle.

    • Mory

Looks like you may be enjoying a little weather today, but looks much nicer for next weekend. But still a chance of ran.

I swear I 'm going to make one of these trips someday! Does anyone live up north Scottsdale by RioVerde and Alma School Rd? I'd love to do a day trip close by. New to AZ still, so I need someone who knows the area. Thanks so much and have fun next weekend!

    July 4, 2014

Penny, any interest in early morning, weekday floats.

      July 5, 2014

YES! I'm not far from the Salt River near RioVerde, but not familiar with it, so I don't dare go alone.

Went to Blue Ridge this week and the lake is very low. Apparently it is being drained so they can work on the dam. The boat launch is not much different then before! Widened the top half but the end of it is basically the same.
