Weekday Salt River Paddle - Water Users to Granite Reef

I know some of you have weekdays off and want to do the Salt River on  a weekday when there are less people there.

The event will be Thursday, July 17th. at 7:30.

Meet at Power & McDowell SE corner in parking lot near the Shell Station at 7:30am. We will figure out which vehicles are transporting Kayaks to Water Users and which will be left at Granite Reef. Hopefully we can leave the parking lot at 7:45am and drop a vehicle at Granite Reef by 8am. I hope to be on the water at Water users at 8:45am after a short safety meeting. We should be off the water by 12:30pm.

We need at least two vehicles to go. I have a long bed PU and can take up to 4 kayaks & people. We need to drop at least one vehicle off at Granite Reef for transportation back to Water Users to get the truck.

Bring plenty of water, lunch, sunscreen, etc. There will be 2 short breaks. Moderate paddling is required as we are not just floating but we are not power paddling either.

This is a GROUP event and we try to stay reasonably together to assist each other in case of mishaps and to help carry the Kayaks to & from the water.

A flotation vest is required and a signal whistle is strongly advised. Also consider tying on everything in case of a capsize.

Ask if you have questions.

A Tonto Use permit ($6) is needed per vehicle parked at Water Users and Granite Reef.

This event is subject to cancellation do to lack of interest (I need at least one other person/vehicle to go); low water flow, or other unforeseen issues. Make sure you check the meet up site for updates prior to heading to the meeting location.

(I know I wrote Kayaks but Canoes and Paddle boards are welcome too)

Fun trip with great weather for this time of year. It was overcast in the morning which kept temps down. The water flow was about 814 and was moving along ok. We had two get offs and practiced a deep water recovery using 3 boats which worked well. No injuries, except for me pulling my calf muscle and cutting my finger, but we all had a good day!

Water flow is about 815 and there is some light rain in the area but the clouds are moving out and I hope they turn up the water at 8am. I'm leaving soon for the meeting place.

I really want to join this event, if I can find someone to watch my kids. Where do you buy the pass?

    July 16, 2014

    • Tim W.

You can buy a Tonto Pass at a lot of convenience stores & gas station on the way to the river on Power Rd or in Fountain Hills, depending where you are coming from. There is usually a white sign with green lettering saying "Tonto Pass Sold Here". Its $6 to park. YOU DONT NEED TO PAY THE BOAT FEE! As that only applies to boats with engines or trolling motors.

When do we get out of the water Mory?

Suzette, Just go earlier, paddle faster or take out upriver from Granite Reef if you want to be off the river by 10 am. I did just that 3 times in the past month on the Lower Salt primarily because of an earlier launch time on the river.

You probably would want to take at Goldfield recreation Site on river left at about 7.0 miles, which is accessed at the stop sign at the Tubing Center. If you want to do that. I follow you in so you can park an take you up to Water Users...

Never been out here. Bringing a friend. Will probably need to do shorter route too.

    July 14, 2014

    • Mory

its only an extra hour on the best part of the river? why shorten your trip and miss the best part? sorry just my opinion.

      July 15, 2014

    • Tim W.

Mory, I agree with you. Too much trouble to load the Kayak & stuff, buy a Tonto Pass, and drive out there not to get a 'full ride'! Plus the carry out at Phon D is harder & longer....

      July 15, 2014

  • Steven M.

I can carry five people but maybe only one more kayak on the roof.

Normally, we leave the Kayaks with a person to watch them at Granite Reef while we are transported back to Water Users to get the vehicles.

I can bring a 5 x 10 utility trailer to load some kayaks on for people that want to leave there cars on power and not pay the 6$. cannot park at granite reef with trailer though, just on top

    July 15, 2014

  • Tim W.

Are there still some who want to go all the way? Obviously, we need at least 1 vehicle to park at Granite Reef, if not then we all can get out at Phon D.
