Apache Lake, Upper Burnt Corral Campout and Paddle

Hopefully, several of us can get out there on Thursday to reserve this location.

Photos posted are from last years Apache Lake Upper Burnt Corral trip.  We camped in this cove next to the water.

A map of the general area both Upper and Lower Burnt Corral campground area's.

and a Google Earth kmz file for mapping purposes:

Upper Burnt Corral Paddle AZ

Upper Burnt Corral is primitive undeveloped camping with portable restroom within  100 yards.

Paddling / camping, fishing,  rescue practice.

Upper Burnt Corral area. See map for location.

Reference: Tonto National Forest map for road detail.

More details coming on activities including paddling up the lake and to beaches nearby.

A Tonto daily pass is needed for day use and camping overnight at Upper Burnt Corral. One Tonto pass is good for 24 hours from the day and time you validate it.

The official word on Upper Burnt Corral from the US Forest service

Suggestions for paddle destinations and activities welcome. Saturday morning after breakfast - noon, a paddle will follow the shoreline north along the narrow canyon portion of the lake, then back to Upper Burnt corral.

Saturday afternoon  we may be having a informal Rescue Clinic / Practice of self and assisted kayak rescue in the cove right in front of where we will be camping.

We'll focus the rescue clinic on kayak braces, paddle strokes, paddle float rescue, minimizing time in the water, assisted rescue's, getting in your boat from the water.

Exact time TBD for those who are interested. Water temperatures and prolonged time in the water may be cold enough to recommend wearing a wet suit for this activity.

Bring a bundle of firewood if you can.

We'd like to see the kayak fishermen in the group out there bringing in some tasty fresh fish too.

Here's a topo / road map posted by paddling friends on their website of the Southern AZ paddle club. Please note the location and road turn off to Upper Burnt corral, (the further north of the two) not to be confused with the developed main campground at Burnt corral.

I like this comment by Ernest Hemingway. "When you stop doing things for fun, you might as well be DEAD"

Does cell phone work there ? Can I have your number in case I can't find you, JRiv?

    October 10, 2012

    • Junko

I mean that we would like to reach you at the campsite if we get lost or can't find you. Is that possible? We will be 3 or 4 girls who have never been there trying to get there early Sat afternoon.... My cell is[masked]

      October 12, 2012

    • JRiv

Hi Junko, The last time is was there at this campsite, there was no cell phone reception. Due to the canyon walls the cell phone signal does not reach there. In the future, some cell carrier may install a cell site (infrastructure) transmitter / receiver at a location that provides coverage down there. Of course a satellite phone will work (Iridium, Globalstar, etc.) I emailed you via the meetup email feature, my cell phone #. It is possible a sms text message may get through and work better because of the way that system works

I also hope to arrive at the site on Thursday via Payson.

    October 9, 2012

    • JRiv

Good points Marshall.. looks like Thursday the storm will move through quickly, but could deposit some rain. Probably best not to camp in the wash area I had in mind on Thursday night, but Friday morning should be OK there. That wash drainage / watershed is fairly small. Using Google earth one can follow it. If the rain were heavy and localized to that area, I wouldn't be in that wash / beach/cove Thursday night. Here's one forecast http://forecast.weath...

      October 10, 2012

    • Marshall

I will check it out again in the morning and review the situation again on arrival. I will camp on high ground on Thursday and move again on Friday. After Thursday night the weather looks good.

      October 10, 2012

    • JRiv

You can also take the Apache Trail, a dirt gravel road all the way (not advised unless you are have there before or like off road) or take the highways via Superior, Globe area, but for most I recommend the Beeline hwy 87, then turn at the Roosevelt lake turnoff

Remember your Tonto Passes, 1 for each 24 hours of camping / day use.

I am going to try to be there by noon on friday also

    October 8, 2012

Great to hear Tom, see you there. I'll have my 4Runner and Microlite camp trailer

      October 8, 2012

    • JRiv

Just thinking of bringing my 4Runner due to logistics, leaving from work Friday morning, so I may be there by 10 am Friday morning.

Upper Burnt Corral mapping via Google Earth... link on this link:
    http://files.meetup.com/1673198/Upper%20Burnt%20Corral%20Paddle%20AZ.kmz

    October 9, 2012

    • JRiv

If you are referring to the kmz file I linked above, first you will need Google Earth installed on your computer. Then just zoom out for a wider (zoomed out) look. This is satellite imagery. Not all browsers are compatible.

      October 10, 2012

    • JRiv

List map http://www.soazpaddle... is a jpg image file of the immediate area so it will not zoom in or out. It's best to buy a Tonto National forest map and know now to read a map. I would NOT depend on a GPS unit for turn by turn directions to Upper Burnt Corral. Most don't load sufficient detail unless one has loaded area topo maps into their GPS. I'll post verbal directions soon on the main page.

Unfortunately won't be making this paddle as I am laid up in the hospital with a fx left distal femur from a bad fall I took at work. Hope to kayak after the 1st of the year.

Laura, It's tentative at this point, but I'd like to paddle from 9:30 - 11:30 am Saturday returning to the camp for lunch. Open to suggestions, but planning on paddling each morning and early afternoon. Some folks may be interested in fishing.

Once people arrive, we'll setup some paddling plans. Keeping this trip open to suggestions. Typically, we have group potluck , cookout and share food Saturday evening.

I leave in the West Phoenix area close to the I-10. Is anyone going up Saturday morning? I would like to meet someone and follow them in if possible. I do not know that area and would feel safer if i could follow some one.

    September 30, 2012

I'll be going up there Friday morning, however someone here is most likely planning on a Saturday morning departure.

Michael, This campsite is undeveloped except for a restroom. Not reservable, not a designated group campsite but it can accommodate a large group.

That looks like alot of fun. Hpoing I can join you for Saturday only.

    September 18, 2012

Yes, you can come out for the day, camp overnight, etc. your preference

      September 18, 2012

Love that place! Can't camp that weekend, but would perhaps be interested in joining you Saturday for some kayaking. Noon?

    September 18, 2012
