Paddle and Kayak Camp on the Lower Colorado River

  • Mar 22, 2013 · 8:00 AM

The suggested skill set for this trip I would describe as skilled strong paddlers with experience at packing your kayak with just enough equipment, food and water necessary to survive 3 days on the river.  At times it can get windy in this area and you may have to paddle through it. Depending on the weather the nights could still be chilly so plan on a sleeping bag and tent as part of your camping gear.  Prior to this trip you should have had at least 3 days equipment in your kayak, know how it fits and more importantly how it floats.  Smaller water tight bags, 19 liter or smaller type size are much better than larger bags. Please be aware you will need to be self contained, as in, if you need it, you will need to make sure it fits in your kayak, Once you commit to the river there are no stores or pickup until the end at Fishers Landing.  There will be Raccoons in the camp sites !! If you have never experienced these critters the are crafty and will steal your food so plan on securing your food.
** This is my summary of expected skill level if you have concerns about the above expectations please email me and lets talk. ***

Trip Summary:

Fishers Landing Web Site:  http://www.fisherslandingresort.com/Pages/default.aspx

We are meeting at Fishers Landing Friday morning Show up time is 8:00am with a hard departure time of 9:00am sharp! Remember this is about a 3 to 4 hour drive from Phoenix depending on where you live. We will be shuttled up from Fishers Landing, to "Walters Camp" this is about a 2 1/2 hour shuttle.  For those wanting to drive up Thursday night camping is available in the open area across from Fishers Landing, there is a rest room available behind the Bar/Restaurant the fee for this camp area is $5.00 payable at the Fishers Landing Store or Restaurant.

I was able to secure a great rate with the outfitter for this trip so the total per person cost of this trip will be $55.  This includes the shuttle cost, launch fee at Walters Camp and $5 per camp site.  I will collect the fees up front Friday morning at Fishers landing.

Friday - Day 1 Depart Fishers Landing NLT 9:00am   We need to be in the water and paddling down the river from Walters Camp NLT than noon.
* Paddle from Walters Camp (Mile Marker 34 1/2) to 4-S campground (Mile Marker 48 1/4)  About 15 Miles * This is about a 5 hour paddle. We have to clear the Wildlife area so this will be a tough first day.

4 S is a fee campground it is a large camping area with fire rings, picnic tables and toilets (No trash service or water at this site)

Saturday Day 2 Depart Camp 4-S to Picacho (Mile Marker 56) About 8 Miles.   We will take our time and do some exploring along the way....

Picacho is considered an improved campground with toilets, trash service, drinkable running water and solar showers.

Sunday Day 3 Picacho Campground to Fishers Landing (Mile Marker 68 3/4) About 10 Miles

Because of logistics and planning this is a limited spot event so be fair to others and please post only if you are sure you can make this event and cancel ASAP if life happens and you can't make it.

Please visit and print this map if possible.

I was looking around your posts and came across this wonderful event. I am getting into kayaking, but still enjoy backpacking. I was wondering what you did for water on the first night, you said you had water at the campground the second night. Did you have to filter water from the River??

    April 21, 2013

    • Robert G.

I carried 2 gallons of water in my Kayak and also had a full Camelback starting the trip. We have found the Az ice tea jugs recycle very well to water jugs.

With regards to the "pot luck" meal thing. when we car camp we tend to have some very, even to say outstanding dishes servered. This has always been kind of a theme for our group. So it just carried over to this event, however kayak camping may be pushing this a little bit as space is limited to what we can carry. So with that in mind. Bring what you would normally bring to eat and if you have a nock or crammy in your craft to toss in something to share, cool. if not its just a option.

    • Robert G.

Theresa I would take a Dutch Oven Recipe if you could email it to me. I have a new Dutch Oven I have never cooked in yet.

      March 19, 2013

Sorry Bob. I didn't get to this quick enough. But usually the pot that just has everything thrown in it comes out the best.

To those that have camped with me before I am making my famous French toast Sunday Morning. To those that have not the french toast is two slices of french bread with a cream cheese spread in the middle topped with blackberries and maple syrup.

    March 20, 2013

    • AZ B.

Oh, that sounds delicious.... Would you like any additions? Sausage, whip cream, eggs??

      March 21, 2013

  • Robert G.

If anyone knows Lauren or Nancy can you ask them to check in and confirm if they are still planning on attending. At this point I am asking the outfitter to only bring one Van.

    March 20, 2013

  • Mark S.

Hi, I am planning on getting to fishers Landing after dinner and camping. I have a fiberglass kayak and would appreciate extra care in transporting it. I will have room for another kayak and 2 or 3 people if anyone needs a ride.

    March 19, 2013

  • AZ B.

Going through my gear.... How is this group Bob?
Do we have a themed night or two?? I have stuff from previous Rivertrips. I have Lua night, Sports night, Mexican.
Are we interested or save the weight??

    March 16, 2013

    • Norman J

Randy, Robert's wife will be driving a vehicle to meet us on Saturday night. So if you want to bring replenishment supplies, you would be able to stash it in that vehicle. Generally this group tries to do a potluck one night on the over night trips. In addition, they will be able to bring firewood so we can have a decent fire Saturday night. I hope that helps.

  • Robert G.

Hi all the week is here. Need a couple of things from the group.
    1. Gut check time if you are not going to be able to make it please let me know by Wed evening. We are on the border of one van or two from the supporting outfitter and I would hate to have them bring two vans then only 10 people show up... (Thanks for your consideration on this)

    2. If you have a fiberglass or kevlar kayak please let me know so the outfitter can ensure appropriate padding to take care of your Kayak. 3. Please post your plans for Thursday night. I think we have a small group camping in the open camping area outside of Fishers Landing. I will be in the area but not camping. I can be reached on my cell at[masked]-Nine 1 zero 2. Please feel to call any time this week if you have questions.

    4. Remember to top off your fuel before heading south from I-10 there are no good options for fuel after you leave Quartzite.

Thursday am camping with Theresa (AZ Backpacker) at open camping outside of Fisher's Landing. Any guidance as to what to bring for pot lucks?

      March 18, 2013

  • Robert G.

Welcome to all the new joins to this trip. ****If you haven't done so already please read through the entire trip description above.**** If you have some extra fluff items, like a Dutch Oven, six pack of beer, extra food, etc. My wonderful wife Kathy is vehicle supporting us for the Saturday night camp at Picacho. So Friday morning you can load the items into our truck and Kathy will bring them into Picacho on Saturday, this also means that any equipment that you don't want to carry down the river on Sunday you could load into the truck and they will be available for pick up at Fishers at the end of the trip. Camping at Fishers on Thursday evening is highly encouraged. The shuttle support trailer should be available on Thursday night to load your Kayaks and gear on.

This is the MapQuest directions remember you have missed the turn off for Fishers landing if you are still on 95 and see the Big Guns at Yuma proving grounds.

This is from Bass Pro Shop in Mesa if you are further west pickup I-10 West the most convent way for you then follow the directions to go **South** 95 at Quartzite.

Does anyone know about what the high/low temperatures will be in that area that weekend? Do we need down sleeping bags or poly?

    March 1, 2013

  • Robert G.

Hi all the day is getting closer we have had some drops and adds. As you may have noticed there is a few spots open. Please take a moment and make your final decision this week about going or not. I am floating Topock this weekend and will advertise this trip so we should be able to fill the empty slots. Getting excited this is going to be a great trip.

    1 · February 26, 2013

    • Sue C.

Yes, I am getting excited too! It was great to meet you on the river yesterday! The weather looks great and I am looking forward to exploring this section of the Colorado.

      March 3, 2013

Same here. Topock Gorge was a great trip and I am looking forward to our next adventure.

      March 3, 2013

  • Mory

Remember all temps are recorded in the shade, once we are on the water we are in the sun, that temp goes up by 15 degrees and protective sun protection is advised. Unless, however you can rig up an umbrella to paddle under :)

    March 2, 2013

  • Christine B.

4pm should be doable. I would prefer to bring my kayak/gear the night before so I will need directions to your place. My email is [masked] so you can email them to me. Then all I will have to do is drive to your place after work on Thursday and we can be off! We can share the gas and enjoy the ride over there, thanks for the great offer! This should be a really fun trip, I'm excited to attend!

    March 1, 2013

  • Christine B.

I have to work on Thursday and Hayden and the 101 is my last acct. I could bring the kayak to work with me but it would probably make more sense to bring my kayak and gear to you the night before but I still need a place to keep my Jeep. I could possibly leave it there but I would be more comfortable leaving it at your place. The earliest I could be off work would be around 3:00.

    March 1, 2013

  • Christine B.

Which Chris is riding with Randy? I can't find another Chris so is it me? If so, I could bring my kayak to Randy's house after work on Thursday, I will be around Hayden and the 101. What time are you expecting to leave? Where exactly do you live, Randy? If I am not the Chris you are speaking about, does anyone else have room for me and my kayak?

    February 28, 2013

  • Christine B.

Would love to attend this trip if there is someone who lives in the north valley who would like to carpool to share expenses. I live around I-17 and Dixileta and would prefer to ride with someone else. I would be bringing the kayak in the picture, 9 & 1/2 feet. Anyone out there looking to share expenses? I could also leave Thursday night.
    Thanks,
    Chris

    February 27, 2013

    • Peggy

This is a 3-day river trip camping out of your kayak with no exit on the river. You will need to carry everything you need in your kayak.

      February 28, 2013

  • Christine B.

Sounds great except I have a Jeep Wrangler so I can only seat 2 with some room for gear. If someone else is willing to drive a larger vehicle seating more people and room for more gear, I would come. I don't know how rough the water will be...anyone else know?

There is camping 100 yards from Fishers Landing for only $5.00 with bathrooms at the resturant. May want to get a big breakfast in AM as lunch may be on the water.

We are heading out Thursday afternoon-ish.

    January 29, 2013

  • Carolyn

Robert, do you know of a place or Miory are you & Peggy interested in finding a cheaper hotel to stay near Yuma Thursday night? Leaving Phoenix at 3:30 am Friday to get to Fisher's by 8 am does not sound like the plan for me. :-/

    January 29, 2013

  • tom m

Unless things have changed since 04 there are places - even at the campsites, that the bank is not sloped but straight up and down ledge and it will help if you have a tie off on the front of your kayak and tie to shore before you attemp to get out

    January 17, 2013

    • Robert G.

Tom thanks for the heads up, but unless the water raises about 4 foot I don't see this as an issue the 4-S camp site has a gentle slope to the beach and the Picacho camp site is a paddle in to the boat ramp where we can unload and stage the boats.

      1 · January 27, 2013

    • Jennifer

Was just at the 4-S camp site last weekend, and there was plenty of room to beach the boats.

      January 28, 2013

  • Robert G.

I was able to pre-run this trip last weekend with the outfitter that is supporting us and this is going to be an awsome trip. I have made some changes to the details above so please re-read it. After making this trip I really want to reiterate my expected skill set and having test packed your Kayak prior to this trip. Friday's schedule is tight with no room for delays. In other words if you are not at Fishers landing with you boat and stuff loaded in the trailer by 9:00am the Van is leaving with out you. I really don't mean to be a hard a$$ about this but we need to keep the schedule to allow for a 2 1/2 hour shuttle and 5-6 hour paddle down river to the 4-S camp site. The first 15 miles is in a wild life preserve restricted area and camping is not allowed.

    January 27, 2013

  • Robert G.

For those on the waiting list I am working with an outfitter to finalize the numbers that we can support so hang in there I will have this finalized by mid next week as well as some more info on the float.

    2 · January 16, 2013

  • Mory

If Apache is too far try Lake Pleasent or Bartlett Lake for a close to home over nighter. Load up and paddle a few miles or so, set up camp and see how it went.
As Bob mentioned once we get to the water, we will have a 15 mile paddle just to get to our first night camp site.
So if this is your 1st time to explore this very fun way to kayak and camp it might be best to get a few over nighters under your belt before attempting 3 days.

    January 10, 2013

  • AZ B.

Hey Robert, maybe a first of March Black Canyon trip would be doable for ya'll. Really enjoyed the 3 dayer I did with Terry and all last year.

    January 10, 2013

  • AZ B.

Being self contained in a kayak is wonderful experience. Being a backpacker, I utilize my smaller lightweight equipment. Last 4 day/3 night trip in Black Canyon, I even brought the Cast Iron skillet. :) It can be done best to plan and have experience with full boat as Robert suggests.

    January 10, 2013

  • Robert G.

I have heard from a couple of members that are concerned about camping out of the Kayak and being self contained. This does require a bit of pre-planning and if you have never camped out of your boat before, I might suggest the Apache lake camp out would be an excellent opportunity to test pack your boat and paddle it around in the water. Not that I am volunteering anybody but there will be a few more experienced members there that could offer some suggestions.
