Under the Dome by Stephen King #2

  • February 22, 2014 · 5:00 PM

The book for our February Meetups is Under the Dome by Stephen King.  Please RSVP for only one date.  Here is a description of the book:

On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when -- or if -- it will go away.

Dale Barbara, Iraq vet and now a short-order cook, finds himself teamed with a few intrepid citizens -- town newspaper owner Julia Shumway, a physician's assistant at the hospital, a select-woman, and three brave kids. Against them stands Big Jim Rennie, a politician who will stop at nothing -- even murder -- to hold the reins of power, and his son, who is keeping a horrible secret in a dark pantry. But their main adversary is the Dome itself. Because time isn't just short. It's running out.

Not my favorite by King, a subpar version of The Stand.

I'm leaning more towards a rating of 3.75, but it was still an overall good read.

Yeah, I agree, Jen. Tooooo looooong, by about 500 pages. He's found a formula, and just cranks it out, changing names and settings. If I hadn't read much better books by him, I would have liked it more. But, I'm not complaining. I'm happy to be part of this group, and love our discussions. :)

Hi, I'm not going to make this one, sorry. And I even read the book, darn it! Good story. Enjoyed it, glad we chose it, because I never would have read it on my own. See you all next month. :)

I listened to a bit, it was okay (not the best reader), so I read most of the book.

I would love to attend but I have to find the book first and while reading through the comments, it sounds like it's very long. I loved watching the show.

I hope those of us who can't finish the book, for whatever reason, will come anyway. If you've seen the movie, then you know the story. Come join us. We always have a good time and a great discussion. :-)

Are there any old schoolers out there who are reading the book instead of on their Kindle? I’m having a hard time getting this one from the library. If anyone has finished reading it I would love to borrow a copy?

    January 30, 2014

    • Brandi

I have it in tradepaperback-I'll probably be done in a few days.

      January 30, 2014

    • Deanna

Awesome! Not to be dense, but I'm not sure what tradepaperback is? But if I can read it that sounds great. Send me an email when you're done and we can make a plan to meet up! Thanks Brandi!

Just started reading the BOOK. Weighs a ton; should have gotten it on my e-reader! Easy read, which is good, because I would never get through it in time, all 10,000 pages of it!! LOL :)

Lea and I were thinking about Shells restaurant as a option-tie in to the Maine seafood thing. I checked their menu and they do have lots of non-seafood options as well. Any thoughts...

Two other seafood restaurant suggestions: Mitchell's Fish Market http://www.mitchellsf... & Catch 23 http://www.catchtwent.... Both accomodate groups. And the best seafood I've had in Tampa area is not for a Meet Up as its small is Lobster Haven http://www.lobsterhav... The guys that own the place are from New England.

Driving while listening to the beginning of the story, quite freaky, kept expecting a dome to fall in front of me!
