Boardgames in Creswell #13: A Board Game Gallimaufry

You're invited to game day lucky number thirteen in nearby Creswell! (Ten minutes south of Eugene.) This free gaming event starts at 2pm. What will we be playing this time? What won't we be...

THE FEATURED GAME: NONE?!?
This week's game day is going to be an experiment. Instead of starting with a large "Featured Game", we're going to try many simultaneous smaller games -- a Board Game Gallimaufry, if you will.

IT'S LIKE SPEED DATING, EXCEPT SLOWER AND WITH LESS LYING
Here's how it will work. Everyone who attends is encouraged to bring a 2-5 player game that they like. (If you don't have any to bring, don't worry, extra games are always available.)

At the start of the event, we'll randomly split into several small groups, each with a "captain". The captain will select a game to play with their group.

Players who are eliminated will win the consolation prize of becoming the captain who selects a game for the next small group that becomes available as other games end.

The goal is to give people a chance to introduce new games we haven't had a chance to try yet.

WHAT WILL YOU BRING?
Feel free to post a comment listing any games you're considering bringing. It may help reduce the learning curve (ie: less time explaining, more time playing) if we have an idea of what to expect.

THE VENUE
We usually have the entire Community Center to ourselves, meaning no background noise or crowds. It's a great place for gaming!

The community center is at 99 South 1st Street in Creswell, just off the main street, behind City Hall and the fire station.
Here is a link to a picture of the Creswell Community Center building:

The room we'll be in is the one on the left in that photo.

FOOD
Snacks are okay. We just need to leave the room as clean as we found it.

PARKING
There's plenty of free parking in the center's parking lot.

I hope you can join us. Whether you're coming from Eugene, Springfield or Cottage Grove, it's just a short drive to Creswell to join us. It's well worth it!

Today's event was a bit different. Instead of a pre-planned Featured Game, someone was selected at random, and they chose what we played.

Stoney won the chance to decide, and introduced us to the world of Castle Ravenloft in a D&D adventure. As with every D&D session I've taken part in, our party was immediately distracted by superfluous details, headed off on tangents in the wrong direction, and overlooked key plot points. It took fifteen minutes of debate for us to cross a short bridge!

But once we got going, we inflicted massive property damage to an ancient castle, avoided a sizzly slime, and blew apart several living gargoyles with what can best be described as a Sonic Burp™.

Unfortunately, with the limited time we had Stoney had to abbreviate our adventure quite substantially. And still, we ran out of time before being able to complete the final confrontation with the story's villain.

Even so, it's always fun to get together with this group. Looking forward to next time.

While I feel bad for monopolizing an entire game session, I had a ton of fun, and hope everyone else did as well! Always a blast with you folks!

I'll bring all the usual games (Avalon, No Thanks, Heap, Catan, etc.) and I might stat up a quick 3.5 D&D encounter if there's interest.

D&D? Innntersting... In the meantime, maybe we'll get a chance to actually play Heap this time. After all, you've only been bringing it for six months now.

I plan to bring Cathedral and Inner Circle. both simple 2-person games one can learn in about half a minute. I thought about bringing a couple Warhammer Fantasy armies but haven't finished getting that project ready.

Cool, I just saw Cathedral mentioned in a podcast not more than a week ago. It sounds like a neat little game.

I'm thinking of bringing these games, which may be good for nimble groups: Boss Monster, Hoopla, Zombie Dice, For Sale, Garden Dice, Incan Gold, Jamaica (will it finally get played?), King of Tokyo, Libertalia, No Thanks, Smash Up, and Suburbia (because I know some people who pretended to hate it but I think secretly liked it and can't wait for me to force them to play it with me again).
