Chattooga 3.5 Girls' Paddle

Join me for a Chattoga 3.5 run!  We'll be putting in at Thrifts Ferry and paddling down to Woodall Shoals.  It consists of mostly class 2 and class 3 rapids.  There are two notable exceptions: Bull Sluice, which is an easy-to-portage class 4+, and one dangerous class 5 feature called Woodall Hole, which we will not go anywhere near. This is a great for intermediate paddlers.  It's a short run which makes it a great option on short winter days.

Things you should know:

  • Because the Chattooga is a Wild and Scenic River, you will have to hike your boat in and out over a quarter mile.  Both paths are wide and well maintained, but steep.
  • Bull Sluice is a mandatory scout.  If this is your first time down this section, I'm going to encourage you to walk it unless you are truly fired up and really want to run it.  It gets run a lot because it's sitting in the middle of an intermediate run, but at the end of the day, American Whitewater has it rated at 4+ and it demands respect.  That being said, I think it's going to be a great level if you want to try it.
  • Occasionally there will be a rash of boat/gear thefts.  Leave someone with the gear at all times.  Hide valuables in your car, or better yet, don't bring them.

I will give you as much or as little direction as you want in terms of lines.  I can describe the conservative lines in great detail, or I can point to the harder lines and grunt.  Tell me what level of support you want and I will provide it.

Allyson, an awesome job on taking us downriver, as usual! When I get ready to do Sec IV, you're showing me the lines!

You are ready skill-wise for Sec IV now and I know you have the ability to make decisions about what to run and what you want to walk in 5 Falls, so when you are ready let me know. I will say, I love some low water Section IV runs in the summer when there are long days and we can take our time and swim through potholes and be lesiurely. But we could also just go to Camp Creek too. Let me know.

I'm getting jealous of all these girls only events..... I feel we're being discriminated against! :)
