MAIN TOPICS FOR THE EVENING:

Stock Market Predictions via MADlib Logistic Regression

Didn't win the big lottery? Maybe it's time for a more lucrative path to riches. Join us as Dan Bikle walks through a detailed technique to apply logistic regression software to predict a three-day direction of the stock market.

Dan Bikle is Community Hacker at Oxdata, and is committed to spreading knowledge about Machine Learning to scientists, engineers, and mathematicians who need to predict the future. He shares his knowledge by teaching via the web, meetups, and conferences with specialties in big data, predictive analytics, Machine Learning, and RoR.

Making Your Tools Work with Big Data: An application of R to Big Data through AWS

Next Jason Miller will explore how an analysis-friendly language such as R -- which has ranked as most popular among data scientists in a KDnuggets poll for three years -- can be used in a easy and cost-effective, scalable manner, through cloud tools available from companies such as Amazon and Google.

Jason Miller is a Data Scientist at JiWire and a published econometrician whose areas of expertise include ML, NLP, HPC, observational statistics and big data. He recently made headlines in the location-based mobile ad-serving industry by inventing the Location Conversion Index(TM).

People, I enhanced my Stock Market preso to the point it is now a website: www.spy611 dot com

    People,

    On March 3,
I invite you to a Meetup which discusses the IB-API to get fine-grained stock market prices down to the minute:

    http://www.meetup.com/batsig/events/163219892/

With IB-API you can get more than just stock market data.

    https://www.interactivebrokers.com/en/index.php?f=1325
    https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/TWSAPI/info

I find these data sources the most interesting:

    US Stock prices
    US Stock-Option prices
    London/Frankfurt/Tokyo/HongKong Stock prices
    Currency-Pair prices
    Currency-Future prices
    Stock-Future prices
    Stock-Index-Future prices
    Commodity-Future prices

If you open a brokerage account with IB,
you can get access to this data (much of it very affordable).

If you allow me to refer you, I will split the $200 referral payment with you. Much of your data will then be free.

    https://www.interactivebrokers.com/en/?f=%2Fen%2Fgeneral%2Fabout%2FtraderReferralProgram.php

If you want me to refer you to IB, send me your e-mail address.

Sandra you spoke about a linkedin group conversation going on about machine learning on big data resources, can you please share the link ?

    Sandra,

As discussed, I recommend that we have sessions where the presenter can walk through some sample code of the implementation of the algorithms. It will give the community a better understanding of the usage of the algorithms. If the data is confidential, can we scrub the data to showcase the application of the algorithms. This is just a suggestion and I hope you consider it for future presentations. Thanks - Joe.

    2 · February 6, 2014

    • Sandra P.

Excellent suggestion. I'll keep this in mind when putting together future topics. If you have anyone to recommend who would be great to lead a future session, let's chat. Thanks for attending this evening.

      February 6, 2014

    • Joe F

Thanks Jason. I understand that we all have to work within the constraints. It would have been great to see implementation of PSM. Although, I should say that you did an awesome job without the code.

    People,

here is the git repository which contains both the scripts and results of the stock market model:

If you want to learn how to operate MADlib using my scripts,
I invite you to my Learning Club at Hacker Dojo on these Saturdays:

We are just getting started so I think this went pretty well given we're new. This was a very interactive session with a lot of Q&A and shared learning--a big part of our mission. Thanks to the attendees for the high level of participation, and the speakers for leading the way.

Unfortunately, I missed the first part of event (introduction), but the presentation section was very good. I am a graduate student and very curious about what's going on in the job/industry. I think presentations are a helpful mean to reach it.

Thank you Sandra for organizing the Meetup. It was a very informative session. I would appreciate if the materials shared at the meetup can be made available online.

Dan, assume we can get access to your shell scripts.

Jason, can you share more insight into the Geo Location details. How to get access to this information. Thanks.

Also a few algorithms were mentioned. It would be beneficial for the group if we can call them out in a notes section for future reference.

hi sandra i understand that the event is booked and there probably is a long wait list. is it going to be streamed or recorded? i really want to learn more about ml techniques and tools!

    February 5, 2014

    • Sandra P.

The event will not be streamed or recorded. If someone is a recording expert, we'd love to have you help out by recording and posting the event. Any volunteers?

    Hello,
I'm a kind of late-to-the-party college student who's starting a blog on different events run in Silicon Valley in a language palatable for those just finishing off their teenage years.

Am I allowed to show up for press purposes?

    Thanks,

    • Sandra P.

Hi Gauri. Great to hear what you're up to! I really hesitate to say "come on down" because we are so overbooked. The space is small and we'll be standing room only. If you come close to 7pm, we'll see if we can squeeze you in. But we can't go over fire code.

      February 4, 2014

    • Gauri V.

Thanks very much for everything you've done, Sandra. I really appreciate it. I understand if you won't be able to take me as well, but otherwise, I'll be seeing you tomorrow night to try to get in! Thanks again. G

  • Saba T.

Hi everyone do I need to register or can I simply show up on Thursday

    February 4, 2014

    • Sandra P.

Yes, you need to register, and we are booked. There is a long wait list. So sorry!

      February 4, 2014

  • Mark H.

If I recall, Groupon is a nice venue for events, but unusually small considering the amount of registrations for this one happening tomorrow. Has this been taken into account? If not, since there is a potential for unpleasant chaos, I may prefer to cancel. However, my apologies in advance if my concerns have been anticipated or I'm completely mistaken about my recollections; in that case, never mind. :)

    February 4, 2014

    • Sandra P.

You're right, Mark. This is small and we will be packed. It'd still be great to have you there if you are so inclined to join. If not, please change your reply to make room for another attendee.

Hey guys, will anyone be going back to Los Altos after the meetup (could I get some ride?) - I am here for a month (research assistant at stanford) and I do not own a car.

I can give you a ride back.

Thanks, Nicole. We are looking into a couple places in Palo Alto and waiting to hear back. I know SAP has several locations in the Bay Area, and we'd like to keep it in/around Palo Alto. I'll email you directly for more details.

    January 8, 2014

  • Nicole O.

It looks like we still need a location. Is that the case? I can see if we can have this at SAP. Let me know. thanks.
