Writing Coaches/Organizers

Writing Coaches Shu-Hsien Ho and Royd Hatta are passionate about teaching youth and teens, ages 7-18, how to organize their thoughts and write with power, clarity and ease. Since 1996, students have worked with Ms. Ho and Mr. Hatta to learn to write essays, research reports, their own poems, short stories and even their first novels. After working with Ms. Ho, one teen writer independently published her 400-page fantasy novel at the age of 20. In 2011 and 2012, Ms. Ho and Mr. Hatta published four anthologies for their students: Strokes of Lightning, Real Heroes Wear Sneakers (available on, Bones of Mystery, and Encroaching Ink. Over the years, students have gotten accepted into top colleges and universities, such as Mount Holyoke College, UC San Diego, Carnegie Mellon, MIT, NYU, and Brown University. Shu-Hsien Ho is a graduate of Pomona College and Lesley University. Royd Hatta has a B.A. from the California State University at Long Beach with specialties in history, art, and theater. Ms. Ho and Mr. Hatta currently teach courses for the Chinese American International School in San Francisco and for local homeschooling groups. They run two thriving writing clubs with over 300 families: Bay Area Young Writers and Bay Area Teen Writers.
