Recent Feedback for Young Writers Camps:

“Cool! Awesome! Interesting! I need more! WOW!”
~ Parent submitted this comment from her son, Third Grader, Palo Alto

“Wonderful class!!!”
~ Parent submitted this comment from her daughter, 10 year old, Oakland

"My daughter had the pleasure of taking a creative writing camp from Shu-Hsien. Though my daughter is an advanced reader, I have had previous challenges creating an environment where she would get into writing. Shu-Hsien was able to get the group of kids to enthusiastically write. They shared their works at the end of the week with oral readings. She is excellent about using various strategies to tap into what works for the individual student and uses interactive group work to start the thinking process moving for the young writers....My daughter came home from the workshop so happy and content, the way she can be after a long stretch of time engrossed in an activity."
~ Julie, Parent of 8-year-old writer

Since 1996, Writing Coach Shu-Hsien Ho has been passionate about teaching youth and teens, ages 7-18, how to organize their thoughts and write with power, clarity and ease. Students have worked with Ms. Ho to learn to write essays, research reports, their own poems, short stories and even their first novels. While working at Linden Tree Children's Bookstore, Ms. Ho met a teen writer who was writing her fantasy novel. After working with Ms. Ho, this writer independently published her 400-page novel at the age of 20. In May 2011, Ms. Ho and her students published two hero-themed anthologies, Strokes of Lightning and Real Heroes Wear Sneakers, now available on Over the years, students have gotten accepted into top colleges and universities, such as UC San Diego, Carnegie Mellon, MIT, NYU, and Brown University. Shu-Hsien Ho is a graduate of Pomona College and Lesley University. She and her Writing Coach husband Royd Hatta currently teach courses for the Chinese American International School in San Francisco and for local homeschooling groups. They run two thriving writing clubs: Bay Area Young Writers and Bay Area Teen Writers.

Students and writing coaches had a wonderful time exercising our imaginative brains with storytelling/writing games, diving deep into what makes a character tick, exploring plot, and discovering how their characters could overcome their problems in the end - essential life skills! Everyone created an awesome story, while discovering the game of polishing your work so that it shines like a diamond! On the last day, they read their work to their peers and parents. I loved how all the students were eager to share their stories! Congratulations to all the young writers for having the courage to be a hero by sharing your adventures!
