attend "Unlucky" Full Moon Picnic - Friday 13 June 9:30-11:30PM on Pont des Arts

Ahoy there,

The next full moon picnic will be Friday June 13 from 9:30 PM until 11:30 PM. Sunset will be around 9:30. Moonrise will be about 10:25 pm.

June was known to American Indians for the Full Strawberry Moon because this is the time to pick strawberries. (I pick mine in the market.)  In Europe it was known for the Rose Moon. For us this year, this the Bad Luck Friday the 13th Full Moon. As the lyrics of John C. Fogerty of Creedence Clearwater Revival say:

I see the bad moon arising.
I see trouble on the way.
I see earthquakes and lightning.'
I see this bad times today.
There's a bad moon on the rise.

Hopefully the weather won't be that bad. But no matter what, unlucky Friday or bad moon, we will gather for our monthly picnic. Someone asked whether we ALWAYS hold it, rain or shine. The answer is " 'Rain,' yes. 'Shine,' not so much. You do know it's after sunset!"

WHAT: Everyone brings food and drinks to share. (Remember to disguise any wine in juice cartons or other innocent containers because the police will probably be enforcing the ban on alcohol on the bridge.)

WHERE: Pont des Arts. We'll gather around a bench towards the Left Bank side of the bridge. Nearest metros: Pont Neuf and Louvre-Rivoli.

WHEN: Friday June 13, 9:30 PM - 11:30 PM

WHY: Share one of the most memorable sights in Paris with some of the nicest people around.

WHO: You and your friends.

HOW to find us: Keep your eyes out for a small white telescope on tripod if the sky is clear and a group of  "lunatics" gathered around a bench near the center of the bridge laughing and speaking English. Check in by cell phone if you can't find us:[masked] 97.

THEME: Superstition

PUZZLER: What is triskaidekaphobia? And what is paraskevidekatriaphobia? And if you have broken a mirror, why should you bring it to our Full Moon Picnic?

Thirteen is considered to be an unlucky number. Triskaidekaphobia is fear of the number thirteen. Friday is an unlucky day. Combine the two and you get paraskevidekatriaphobia: fear of Friday the 13th. Read more at

Everybody knows that breaking a mirror will bring you seven long years of bad luck… unless you use the broken pieces to reflect the full moon and gaze into it.

Thanks Jim. Yes the bridge is definitely open - after a brief "Chicken Little" panic, "The bridge is falling, the bridge is falling..." It was just one little chain link panel of locks. Now you have to search hard just to find the place where it's been replaced by a piece of plywood. Much ado about nothing. See you tonight!

Thanks for the head's up Marta. Looks like this full moon picnic may be bad luck indeed. Here's the deal: The picnic is still on for Pont des Arts for Friday. Even the French administration should be able to fix the problem by then. If anything changes, I'll send out an email during the day on Friday. In the meantime, anyone who lives near the bridge or who has update info, please share it with me. I plan on us being lucky!

The Pont des Arts was closed for a few hours because the weight of the padlocks people have attached to the pont caused one of the side panels to break. But the bridge was quickly reopened.

I heard that the Pont des Arts has been blocked off and is hence inaccessible due to architectural the picnic still on? And if yes, where will it be moved to? Thanking you in advance for the info, and looking forward to the picnic, ciao for niao, Marta
