attend Moonrise Picnic - Fri 30 Nov from 6:30-8 PM, Pont des Arts

Ahoy there,

The next moonrise picnic will be Fri, November 30 from 6:30 pm until 8:00 pm. The actual full moonis on Nov 28 but it rises too early (4:30 pm) to meet, so this is an opportunity to get a more interesting view as moon gazers saw last time with the partial moon revealing the relief of the surface because of the shadows around the craters. Moonrise will be around 7:00 pm.

American Indians called November the Beaver Moon. Some people claim this was because it was the last chance to set traps to supply themselves with warm furs for the cold the cold winter ahead. Personally I'm skeptical that Indians would wait until the last minute to build their wardrobe. Maybe the Full Beaver Moon comes from the point of view of the beavers as they make their own preparations for winter. It's also called the Frosty Moon.

WHAT: Speaking of frosty, it will be cold. If you want to be popular, bring hot drinks: hot cider, hot chocolate, spiced wine, coffee, etc. Everyone brings food and drink to share.  Ban on alcohol is no longer in effect.

WHERE: Pont des Arts. We'll gather around a bench on the Left Bank side of the bridge. Nearest metros: Pont Neuf and Louvre-Rivoli.

WHEN:  Fri, November 30,  6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

WHY: Share one of the most memorable sights in Paris with some of the nicest people around.

WHO: You and your friends.

HOW to find us: Keep your eyes out for a small white telescope on tripod if the sky is clear and listen for tongues chatting and teeth chattering. Check in by cell phone if you can't find us:[masked] 97.

THEME: Warm clothes, duh.

PUZZLER: The full moonrise on Wed Nov 28th will be dimmer than usual in Europe. Why? (Thanks to Michael Muszlak for alerting me to this event.)

PUZZLER ANSWER:   No, it's not because it will be cloudy. In fact skies are forecast to be clear, so look for the moonrise around 5:35 PM. (In North America look as the moon sets before dawn.) You may see the very end of a Penumbral lunar eclipse, as the moon passes out of the earth's Penumbra. This shadow only partially obscures light from the sun, so any effect will be very faint, but at least you can claim that you think you saw something. ;-)

ciao for niao,
Captain Bob
