A full day of Indian movies at Gaumont Champs Elysées !

From Wednesday (16 January) to Sunday (20 January), the first edition of the Film Festival of South Asia transgressive is taking place in Paris : a great opportunity to...

- ... enjoy Indian movies in a big Parisian cinema (tamil/hindi/punjabi movies!),

- ... discover movies which are different from the traditional big Bollywood hits : this festival aims at showing the variety of Indian cinema outside of the boundaries of its biggest industry.

The Festival features 6 films in competition: Udhao, Loot, Alms for a blind horse, BA Pass, Vazhakku Enn 18/9 and Pizza.

As Saturday is the easiest day for most of the people (out of office schedule!), those who are willing to join can come whatever the time for any of the movies.

Ticket price : 6€ (5€ for students)

Programmation of the day is as described below. All the trailers are available on FFAST official webpage

- 10.30AM : Vazhakku Enn 18/9, tamil movie by Balaji Shaktivel

Plot : "What was seemingly a banal love story between Velu and Jyothi, turns into a grim and tragic scenario, fed with social injustice and corruption."

IMDB review here (rating 8.7/10)

- 1.30PM : B.A. Pass, movie by Ajay Bahl (first European screening)

Plot : "Delhi. After the death of his parents, a young man tries to support his two sisters at all costs, even if it means becoming a gigolo ..."

Movie-maker will attend the screening for a debate

- 4PM : Pizza, tamil movie by Karthik Subbaraj

Plot : "Michael Karthikeyan, a pizza deliveryman with an ordinary life, finds himself witnessing a murder during one of his deliveries. To this misadventure, are added mysterious and fantastic circumstances..."

Movie-maker will attend the screening for a debate

- 7PM : Alms for a Blind Horse, punjabi movie by Gurvinder Singh

Plot: "A day in the life of a family in a village in Punjab. While the villagers are busy worrying about work related trials and injustices, the night of a lunar eclipse gradually falls on the village ..."

IMDB review here (rating 7.1/10)

Movie-maker will attend the screening for a debate

- 9.50PM : 7AUM Arivu, le 7ème sens, tamil movie by A.R. Murugadoss

Plot : "Tamil Nadu (India), genetic researchers are developing a technique to revive a Buddhist monk who lived in the 5th century AD! The situation is not totally under control. Forces are unleashed!"

And on Sunday if you want, there will be a screening of Delhi Belly (Amir Khan production) at 4.30PM to close the festival.

If you have seen any of these movies, please share your views and advice...!

See you on Saturday :)

So, if I understand well, there will be many people attending BA Pass: for those who aren't rushing to watch Pizza right after it, we can go to Sir Winston bar/restaurant which is 5, Rue de Presbourg - 75016 Paris, for a drink.
(Timing should be around 3:15PM or so, as the movie lasts 97 min). We can meet in the hall of the cinema to go there all together !

I will also be watching Alms for a blind horse and I'm open for a dinner if other members are willing to do that as well : just let me know...

Hey Raya, I havent found other meetup members so no bar plan I guess..! The snow must have discouraged people. Will be attending Alms for a blind horse, maybe we can meet before the movie if you're coming for this one too?

Hi everyone! Lots of people joining,
    that's great :)

As it wont be easy to meet before
    sessions (everyone will attend
    whichever movie(s) they prefer!) and
to fight to get 20 seats together,
maybe we can try to set up a meeting
for dinner? Either after Pizza or after
Alms for a blind horse, in a nearby
restaurant... Or a drink in the
afternoon. Will look for a nice place
around that isn't too expensive and
    suggest it tomorrow!

Hello Mylene, Would these films have french subtitles or they will all be playing in their original versions only? Thanks

      January 15, 2013

    • Mylène

Hello Kinjal, They will have subtitles for sure -am just not sure whether these will be French or English!

7am Arivu starts off very promisingly but terribly botched up as it progresses. Post intermission, its excruciatingly ridiculous. Delhi Belly, can have a good laugh even for the hundredth time! Highly recommended, good black comedy a la Lock Stock/ Snatch.

Pizza got good reviews back home, I shall be cautious about recommending anything I havent seen. :)

Haven't heard of the other movies, but I'm in for all!

Hey Sai, thanks for the reviews, helpful indeed.

Update: Vazhakku Enn 18/9 is apparently so realistic, its heartbreaking.

      January 15, 2013

  • Jennifer

Sounds very cool! I will try to make it!
